Hello,
I am thinking of spending a year in China (2005-2006 schoolyear) teaching ESL, and hopefully other topics. My aim is threefold: learn Chinese, experience a different way of life, and teach (I enjoy teaching).

Although I would be more than happy teaching English, I would be even happier teaching a subject I have a degree in, and a subject I have experience teaching. The subject is Digital Media (web development, graphic design, animation, visual effects, 2d/3d gaming, etc). The first problem for me is that I only have a Bachelor's Degree (albeit with highest honors and all). The second is that I have relatively limited experience in the field (3 years of a large variety of contract work spanning the entire field). However, I have taught summer seminars and co-taught four courses at University level. The third problem is that my Chinese, roughly at beginner/intermediate level, is surely not enough to carry a course in digital media - I would have to teach in English.

My questions:
1. Do you think I have shot at getting a position teaching something other than ESL perhaps something like 14 hours of ESL and 4 hours of Digital Media courses per week?
2. If yes to #1, how should I go about finding such a position?
3. Any other advice?

Thank you very much for the advice!

Serge

I think there is a big opportunity to offer foreign trained instruction in digital media in China. However I have never seen any positions available.

I have worked in the interent industry here in China where I had to deal with many people who develop websites and graphics and their skills and training is very limited. Hence the opportunity to have foreign instruction.

There are a number of private schools in China but they don't have foreign teachers that I am aware of.
