I'm back to considering an ESL gig, you all make it sound like such a blast. I have a BA, from Canada. What I really want to know, from those with experience, is it possible to find a somewhat profitable and enjoyable four to six month position? I absolutely cannot be away longer than that but would really like to teach overseas. I'd consider any corner of the world, and of course would love to have expenses covered but I don't know the chances of this for a short contract. I'd love to hear about good experiences with short contracts. Any info would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
This site is an amazing resource, and I will continue plodding through the posts!
Cheers

Profitable? Not too likely.
Four to six months is about what it would take to break even. Figure in airfare (most places in Japan don't pay it), storing your belongings before you leave home, buying new clothing and anything else, spending what you will while you get used to new and perhaps exotic surroundings, etc.

Enjoyable? That's very subjective and dependent on where you go, how you prefer to live, what type of teaching job you get, what your experience has been adjusting to new surroundings (let alone foreign ones where the language itself can be daunting), the isolation you may face away from friends and family, what your co-workers and students are like, etc.

In Japan, about the only place that offers such short contracts is Westgate Corporation.

The only places where you'd make a profit in six months generally won't need or be interested in anyone who only wants to work for six months. If you throw out the "make a nice profit" bit, then you could have six months in China somewhere, probably, and maybe they'd cover half of your round trip airfare.

You might also be able to join all the other Canadians in Korea and possibly make some kind of a profit there (though you'd probably have to break your contract and go early) -- but would probably miss out on the enjoyability factor while there. For more info about that, try pitching your idea to the seething idiot horde that is the Korea forum, a seperate section here on Dave's cafe.

If youve got a European passport, then you could do a couple of summer camps in the UK, you get paid accomodation, and youll be able to save. I recommend doing a spell-check before sending off any covering letters/c.v.s etc.
