It never ceases to amaze me how some people(please note...I am not saying all...or even most) who post on this board cannot admit it when they make a mistake. We all make mistakes.I will state unequivocally here that I have been mistaken in the past and I am sure I will make mistakes in the future. Is that so difficult to admit? For some people,it does seem difficult.
On another thread, the poster remarked about some of the posts being unpleasant.Very true,Well, there are some unpleasant people in this field(boy, what an understatement!)...as well as some...well,they are a few bricks short of a load. But I guess that applies to many fields..although the unregulated nature of this "profession" seemingly draws undesirables and uh...people who are playing with less than a full deck...like flies to honey.
I will admit to doing my share of flamethrowing, but I have always stopped short of namecalling...such as calling someone an "idiot" or "moron"What good does that do?(true, they may BE an idiot, but that is beside the point)
Plus,if the mods were not there to check the posts, the verbal abuse would probably degenerate to a much lower level.
Now, I am not getting "touchy-feely".That is okay for people who want to do that...but personally, that idea gives me the "creepy-crawlies".
Anyway,I think people can disagree(and even disagree quite vociferously0 without the namecalling...but I doubt if things will change much... |

Dear bxix,
Name-calling is juvenile and the last resort of the " mentally-challenged ", I'd say. But I think you also have to recognize that a poster can be vicious and nasty without indulging in that sort of verbal abuse. Mean-spiritedness can be expressed in any number of more subtle ways: sarcasm, irony, innuendo, etc. To me, it's the " tone " of the post that truly matters. That's what reveals the desire to hurt another in a posting.
Regards,
John |

Dear maryam2003,
" Whatever happened to you? "
Well, for starters - I got old ( and so did you, if you knew me in my college days ). However, you'll undoubtedly be glad to know that I'm still " the cutest thing this side of Chattanooga and south of the Mason-Dixon Line! ". And habibi, if I didn't already have a lovely Significant Other, waiting for me in New Mexico, why I'd be happy to put a little mint in your julep.
Regards,
Dear little ( 5'9", 148 pounds ) John |

Hi its me!!
Yes as the victim of one of these name calling attacks I felt so crushed and hurt that a fellow professional (maybe) used the I word on me I just couldn't l ive with myself ,absolute complete and utter tosh ,eyewash ,maidens water, bollocks . If I write a response that some don't like and they give as good as they get then so what I think there should be more name calling its good for you gives you a chance to let off steam if you can't do it here than where?
If any one feels put off or threatened by negative or insulting remarks what the hell are you doing in this job? |

Dear richard ame,
" If any one feels put off or threatened by negative or insulting remarks what the hell are you doing in this job? "
Gee, over twenty years in the field, and yet it never occurred to me that being insulted, put off and/or threatened was part of the job. Well, guess I've been hanging around with the wrong people. Thanks for enlightening me.

John |

Richard Ame and Johnslat obviously have very different opinions on it(Namecalling, etc).I doubt either one will change his opinion...Personally,I do not see anything wrong with sarcasm and innuendo...namecalling.... what good does it do?A calls B an "idiot".B retaliates by calling A a "moron".So what? |

Why ..JohnSlat, you ole rascal you!!! You always did have a silver tongue and knew how to turn a girl's head!!!
You haven't changed a bit!
You're right though....we have got a little older and perhaps a little wiser. So you're still 5ft 9in and 149lbs, you handsome devil you!
Since my hysterectomy, I've been trying to get back into shape. I've joined a gym and I'm takin one of them Pie-lates classes.
I'm now down to a svelte Size 22 and only 1 and half ax handles (width)across the "a***", oh, pardon me, I mean derriere. I must remember my manners for after all, I am an upright Southern lady.
Anyway, I went out and bought me one of those hot pink Spandex gym outfits (Hubert, my 10th or whatever husband just can't keep his hands of me!). Oh, I do hope that my personal trainer is out of hospital. Why, the other day, I just gave a little old tug on one of those gym machines and it came crashing right down on his head. Poor man, needed 17 stitches.
Oh, Hubert's waiting and I still have to put on my new watermelon coloured lipstick. Or should I wear the magenta?
Bye y'all. Be nice to everyone now. |

Dear maryam2003,
Ah, you little ( well, OK - maybe not so " little " anymore ) minx, you. " silver tongue " and " a girl's head " indeed. Sounds to me like you recall our college days quite well. Tell me - are you still the cunning linguist that you were back then? I suspect age has not withered nor custom staled your infinite variety. Glad to hear that you're in a gym ( rather than a Jim in you ) these days and keeping your trainer in stitches. You always were a hoot. Give Hubert my regards, but if he starts hanging around a pre-teenage girl named Lolita, well, that might spell trouble on the horizon. And go with the magneta - it expresses your inner self much better than that insipid watermelon.
Regards,
John |

i usually agree with Johnslat's posts, and here i am again agreeing once more! "tone" is just the same as name calling, one is passive the other is direct (i know it's probably more complex than that but GOD man! it's nearly 3am! what more can you expect from me!?). TECHNICALLY they're different, i mean, "tone" is one word, and "name calling" is two...but the intentions behind the words are one in the same.
for example: a poster wrote, "all the little gods and goddesses,so maybe some of them do have that kind of complex. On the other hand, some are not complex at all, actually exceedingly simple,if you get my drift" could easily be written as, "you're simple". Both these ways of saying something mean is still mean. and ya, you're right, it's not needed. In the tone of Chandler Bing, "could i BE any more passive?" |

Dear cheryl,
One point I'd like to make - when some other poster attacks ME first, well, then there's no more Mr. Nice Guy. Being an agnostic, I don't feel obliged to follow the " turn the other cheek " admonition.

Dear maryam2003,
Why thank you, honeybunch. Yes, I was the original barefoot boy with cheek(s). And may I say you're pretty cheeky yourself.
