Hi! I'm applying to AEON (& its Amity branch) and ECC along with my boyfriend. Anyone have any tips or suggestions for what I should make sure to mention in my cover letter/essay? Particular things I ought to mention to these two employers?
Qualification-wise, I have a journalism degree and some unofficial tutoring experience (some people I knew had a hard time in an editing class, so I helped them out). I do speak some basic Japanese and plan on learning more before I go (and I'm certain lots more when I get there!) ^_^
Thanks much!

As far as the AEON cover letter goes just follow a basic western style format. In case you don't know that's three paragraphs. In the first you mention how you came across the company and why it interests you. In the second you provide a brief history of yourself. In the third you emphasis how you would be perfect for the job, and give thanks for their consideration. The stickies don't apply for a company like AEON because they will be read by native English speakers. While making sure the cover letter is grammatically perfect, you ought to put more effort and thought into the essay they ask for. If you do a search on this site you will find out a lot more about that. Good luck. |

Just a couple of points;
95% of new teachers come with a university degree as its needed for your work visa. Your major is not so important as they fact you can get a visa to work there. Journalism anyway is more about good writing, and most of the language you use will be focussed on speaking at an elementary level, getting your students to talk, and the language you use certainly is not what you find in a polished written article. A background in journalism may help, but not much.
Most employers do not expect that foreign teachers can use or speak Japanese. Use of Japanese will certainly be banned in the classroom. Learn Japanese for your own benefit and self-development (helps you learn how difficult it is to learn foreign languages, and how hard it is for your students. Don't expect Japanese ability to play a big role in your getting hired, as you are being paid to speak English.
As for the cover letter, rather than 'blow your own trumpet' and tell them how great you are, think about what you can offer your students and why they should hire you. What do you have to offer students and how will students benefit. Your speaking Japanese to them will not help them.
Employers want to know why you want to come to Japan, why you want to teach English and how interested you are in Japanese culture (without going overboard). |
