I am applying to aeon and ecc. I am worried about past japan teaching experience. I have some, but I think it might hurt me. The man at aeon said that since I only stayed a year on a two year teaching program, there could be red flags on why I only stayed a year. They really need a reference from the school. I could get one, but is it worth the effort of holding up the application?
THe amount of time it takes to get there seems excessive too. It would be about five months. Is this normal? The website says three. Is there anyway to speed up this process?
Another thing is if you have a prefernence to leave early and a location, you could get refused employment. Is it possible to accept employment with no preferences and then after employment gained, make a preference.
Any advice on a succesful application at aeon and ecc? |

If you, in fact, didn't complete that teaching program, I wouldn't bother mentioning it. Maybe mention it incidentally in your one-on-one interview, but try not to point out the fact that you were essentially a drop-out... And that time it'll take to get that reference is exorbitant too. Schools are hiring now; if you wait three to five months, available positions are going to dry up a bit.

Um... no. In that case, part of the reason you were hired was because the company knew they could place you wherever they needed you, so to suddenly insist on a location would be disingenuous and unfair to the company. However, I believe that when your initial one-year contract is up, you may be able to request a different location if the company will re-up you (that is, if you really want to go through the hassle of moving all your stuff again after only a year). |

Yes it is normal to wait that long for a placement, so don't fret. From the time I accepted to the time of my arrival in Japan I would say that approx. 5 months will have passed. Japan is very popular these days so the waiting period has grown. Expect to wait a while to hear from them after you apply and then after you interview as well. It kinda sucks but it gives you time to save the money you will need for startup costs. You should have in the neighbourhood of $3000 CDN. That's like $10 american ... ...actually its about $2500 or so. |

i dont think you understand. i finished a year of the program, but there was an option to do it three years. It was a good program, jet. i came baack for non-professional reasons. it is just they will ask, why did you leave jet for this job?
i am taking a year off of medical school, but it sounds too complex. is it even worth putting it on the application. do they even care if you have past alt experience? |

the thing about aeon is that one of their biggest issues is teachers who sign a one year contract and then break it for whatever reason and leave. they hate that... and rightfully so. when that happens someone from the hq has to go to the school and take over until they find a replacement. hence if your timing is right and they are looing for a replacement right away, they could hire you on the spot. i've known teachers that have been brought in in less than three weeks!!
aeon pays well and there are many perks to working there (they find an apt for you, paid training, etc) my advice is to get the reference. basically you need to convince them that you are committed to the full year.
as far as location goes, they tend to be a bit more flexible... usually a group of teachers leaves at the same time so there are at least some options.

p.s. why can't i get my icon to show up?????? |

As you know Prlester, if you were on JET, the contracts are yearly, renewable up to three years. If you finished out your yearly contract(s), then you should be fine.
I know a couple of ex-JETS working for both ECC and Aeon. One of them only did two years on JET (finished out the contract though).
I know that if you didn't finish AT LEAST a one year contract, ECC will not consider you for employment.

If I were hired by one of the companies you mentioned, I'd wait it out. It depends on the teacher vacancies and their needs.
A 5 month wait is quite normal.

You shouldn't be denied a job due to location preferences. In fact, both companies will ask you what location you prefer, if they decide to hire you.
Good luck and may the force be with you. |
