I have never lived there myself but from what I have seen on my visits it seems like a very nice place. Very much countryside though, if you're looking for nightclubs and the like you probabaly won't find it in Nara. There are some great hikes there and some beautiful temples. On the downside it is a bit of a tourist trap, particularly on Sunday's Japanese tour buses flood the area. I wouldn't mind living there myself, I prefer the quiet life. |

I live in Kyoto but live right on the border between Nara-city limits and Kyoto prefecture. My train station is in Nara but Im in the 'burbs, or bed-towns they call them here.
Smallish place, known for its temples and deer. Have never been into clubs and restaurants but it does have a small shopping street. If you want nightlife I suggest Osaka. Just think of it as being a small mid-sized city.
Pretty central to everything and easy train access to Kyoto, Wakayama and Osaka. rents are reasonable compared to Osaka as well and you can pick up some good deals. Never really dealt with locals except the inlaws but people are fairly conservative around here. |

I've been to nara once for a few days. It has a couple of nice hikes, if that interests you. |

Wow, is the shopping street near the train station pretty much it in Nara? yikes. Oh well, I liked that street because there were some areas where people were selling cheap used kimono and stuff right on the street, like a sidewalk yard sale.
Well, anyway, we stayed there a couple days, at a hotel right on that street. There are temples and ancient history galore (and a lot of cats see my gallery here:
http://photobucket.com/albums/v145/wintryplum/japan-cats/ --the first one's Kyoto, the rest are Nara).
There's a ninnikuya (garlic restaurant) near the station that was good.
It felt like a pretty friendly place. There are a lot of tourists there, but probably 75% are domestic (wild guess at proportion). We thought we wouldn't mind living there. |

I have been there before. To visit, it is fine.
Since I live near Tokyo I appreciate the natural beauty of Nara and the fact that you can see the stars there at night.
I liked walking about and seeing the kofuns and old temples.
Nara is close to Osaka, so Osaka is a good place for going out.
It is also close to Kyoto. Kintetsu and JR are both convenient to use.
I like hiking and Nara ken has some places for that.
Nara is quiet, but I prefer quiet to the noise in Tokyo. |

OP: Nara: You've struck the mother-lode: Superb Park; unbelievable Temples; museums; good rail links to Kyoto and Osaka.
winbe: Decidedly mixed reputation, do a search on them here and on gaijinpot.com and get your contract checked at generalunion.org |
