Sapporo has been on my mind alot lately, it sounds like a good option, i currently work at a private school as opposed to a language centre, and was wondering if any one knows if private schools generally hire through an agency or if i am better off doing the leg work and doing the walk around resume drop off thing? If they do go through agencies who is big in Sapporo? Can any of you nice folks out there offer some advice about work in Sapporo..thanks in advance for any information at all on Sapporo. |

This thread will probably help you

Glenski is the guy to ask since he is living in Sapporo. From what I've researched, be wary of many schools there, particularly EC, Alpha English Academy and Japan Continental Corporation. Unfortunately I haven't hread of any "good" schools that specialize there other than IAY and NCB, but they don't seem to be looking after I contacted them. |

Neither. If you don't see an ad or know a contact, you might as well not even waste the time. If a place isn't advertising, they aren't hiring.
Private schools don't generally use recruiters.

Besides reading that thread das offered, what else would you like to know? I just noticed that NCB is hiring a PT person. Subscribe to the Hokkaido Insider for exclusive ads on Hokkaido. Tell them I sent you.

Only EC is in Sapporo; those other two are on Hokkaido but not in Sapporo. |

Glenski, is it dificult to get full time work in Sapporo elementary/ highschools? I have just finished a year in an elementary school in Thailand and would prefer this sort of position over a language school, although really i'm not that picky and i guess will have to take whatever comes my way.. How about you, whats your situation at the moment? Do you suggest doing a walk in at NCB, ive been searching for there contact details and am not having much luck(apart from basic location) Please excuse my random questions, i arrive in a couple of days and am starting to feel the travel nerves big time... Thanks for your advice. |

I Emailed NCB a month ago, they basically said they only hire on a "need only" basis and do not sponsor visas but will renew |

Nope, I'm in Hawaii, and like you I am looking for a job preferably in Sapporo because I have several friends there and would like the convinience of a city but not at Osaka/Tokyo cost of living. I tried almost every available schools that have a webpage/email addy online for the entire of Hokkaido (browsing through the japanese version of an online yellow pages) and most of these schools were either not looking or rather shady. I'll probably have to subscribe to Hokkaido Insider like Glenski said
http://www.ne.jp/asahi/hokkaido/kenhartmann/
I already got interviews lined up with a school in the Kansai area, Aeon and Hearts School but I want to keep many options open.
The only thing I can easily secure so far in Sapporo is a job as a baker in my friend's bakery |

1. Unless you have a minimum of a year teaching in Japan, you shouldn't expect to land any job teaching in a traditional school. Exception would be to latch onto a dispatch company to get you an ALT position, but that has its disadvantages, too.
2. I have only worked in one Sapporo HS, so I can't claim to know how easy or hard it is to get into all of them. However, since they really don't advertise much publicly, that will be your toughest barrier.

I have one more year on a 3-year contract at a private HS, then I'm out on the street. Since I have a spouse visa, I don't have to worry about getting sponsorship for a work visa.

No. They are advertising for PT work only, and my contact there (who has been there a long time) says they are cutting back, even on HIS hours). Cold-calling any place in Japan doesn't really amount to much success. Moreover, PT jobs rarely amount to visa sponsorship anyway, and you need that.

I'm writing this from work, and I don't have my local Sapporo information here. If you email me at home, I could look up the list of gaijin houses in the area. [email protected]
Here is one. http://www.plaza-sapporo.or.jp/sgh/
