lettes get real a teacher under 30? or teacher must be over 19? geet a life can you be a teacher? well if under ... you can teach kindergarden? but if over 30 you are to old? like wine i have got better with age how about you????

Just curious...does anyone know the ratio of non-native ESL/EFL teachers to native-speaking ones?

About 4:1 in favour of non-natives at my last school. The students assumed everyone was English unless they were told otherwise. Non-native teachers then told us exactly what the students thought of us. Shocked

It's varied in Mexico. Some schools are 100% foreign teachers, some a mix, and some 100% local.

It can be tough in the mixed schools as foreign teachers are often paid more than the locals causing hard feelings, and sometimes rightly so.

At the school where I work, we're 100% native teachers, but I know that a lot of schools here use some of both.

One problem that creates is that there is resentment between the higher paid vs lower paid staff. I agree, Guy, this is sometimes just blatant, opportunistic exploitation. But there is some justification for at least some difference. (I had to catch a plane to get here, and if I want to see my family sometime, will have to take another one. And many foreigners are not eligible for lot of the same benefits as local citizens, so the end of the month check isn't the only factor. )

Another problem is local prejudice. I have worked with quite a few highly qualified, extremely skilled non native teachers of English. But the first question any new student who comes in asks is "Are ALL your teachers native?" And you just can't convince them that native is not the same as good. Many schools have learned the market lesson that a lot of clients will pay more for a semi-literate (foreign) backpacker than a highly trained (local) professional. Kinda sad, no?
