If you get to China and meet other Foreigners try to wait a little while before you ask them this question, "Ah, where you from???". I'm sick of people not taking the time to actually say "hello, my name is ....... nice to meet you.".
I know it's tempting to use as an ice-breaker, but it's so annoying to have to answer everytime you meet someone.
If you are the next foreigner to ask me this question, I might punch you in the nose.
