Some have left ("fled"), yes, but the schools don't seem to be in a rush to replace them. At the moment it is not possible to predict anything, not even if they are going to hire anybody for the new term! |

The college here just asked me to sign on for another year. I was beginning to wonder if they were going to have any foreign teachers next year. It seemed to surprise them when I told them that I would have to look the contract over for a day or two and then give them an answer. Going to be careful about what it says this time. |

Hi guys!
I think the leaving and recruitment thing might be situational as well as locational. In our currently unaffected part it's definitely business as usual, growth projections unchanged, and no changes to the standard contract. One of the guys, who's coming to the end of his contract, is happily signing on for another tour of duty.
Cheers,
Les

Some teachers (4) here left. But they just used the SARS thing as an excuse. They were just one-timers who weren't too happpy with China. |

The ripple effect caused by the panic about SARS is far wors ;commercial training centres had to close down as students did not show up or by order of .a local authority were not allowed to run classes
I lost a sunday afternoon gig, 600 down the gurgler.
For some it might be worse and a good time to take a holiday.
The number of students dropped sharply in two kindergartens. It made me wonder if this would result in a salary reduction. It did not, but it could for others.
So if the teachers are running away, so are their students |

Our extra classes have been postponed "because of SARS" we're told-in a city of 16 million with just 2 deaths. But the classic economic phenomenon that, in times of doubt, people become ultra conservative in their spending habits, is clearly true here. My son's kindergarten closed for a week due to lack of attendance [its a purely local operation], but is back now. Restaurant trade is picking up again, and I think our "industry" will do the same. I have noticed though that employment websites, eg this one, don't have as many China jobs as usual, especially with a new school year not far away. |

I have a small language school in central China. This province only has 10 sars cases, been over 2 weeks since a new case was reported, and theres zero in this city. Still, all my teachers returned home because of the sars reports they were hearing. After working for a week, I ended up having to teach all their classes for the next 2 months because of imposed sars regulations restricting who can go where in the city (and since I know everyone here... . Anyway, I was literally teaching 60-70 hours a week. Meanwhile my teachers were receiving their salary, etc, but complaining that they were bored and felt they were in danger, but sill calling my cell phone during class to ask what some random person on the street was saying. (No, it wasnt important, this is just another person saying Hello,... or yeah, all they said was Lao Wai dont worry about it.)
All I know is I lost a lot of money and taught scads of extra classes because of sars, and I have no idea when I'll be able to start classes again... |
