It has come to one's attention that quite a few teachers in Turkey are suffering from depression, some of these individuals have forms of depression serious enough to warrant specialized medical care.
If you or someone in your circle of teachers is suffering from depression, you would be well advised to seek appropriate medical help, before serious consequences manifest themselves.
A first step in the right direction would be to take this self help test to assess the degree of your depression.

I tried the test. Result:

This suggests to me that the organisation conducting the test could do with English language training!
I also noticed that when I changed only one answer, that they were all too eager to refer me somewhere for paid treatment.
In addition I found that most of the questions were designed to elicit a negative response. Nowhere was a question asking (for example) "How often in the last two weeks have you really enjoyed yourself and had a good time?" If you ask negative questions, you tend to get negative answers. |

That is because there are some questions which are key to the issue of detecting depression. Questionnaires are designed to elicit information, but in doing so, some of the questions are lightweight, because the lighter questions act as a safeguard for the individuals who are less than honest in the way they answer the questions, for whatever reason that might be. |

I then changed the answer to question 6 to "most of the time" and I was told

So basically if you are not getting any you are depressed  |

Folks: Keep in mind that depression is a serious issue - and extreme cases of depression can lead to suicide attempts and actual suicide.
T.E.F.L. teachers are not excluded from the problem, and the truth is that many TEFL suffer from depression.....and have chosen to go overseas in an attempt to cure the depression they were suffering from in their home countries. Sometimes it helps to go overseas, but often, people bring their problems/baggage with them....resulting (often) in alcoholism, which appears to be a common illness (yes it is an illness) among the TEFL expat. crowd.
Many teachers ghost has met suffer from - bipolar disorder similar to manic depressive psychosis - in which individuals alternate between frequent lows and sometimes intense, short lived highs.
A strange bunch - TEFL teachers - certainly makes it interesting. |
