| I bet a lot is exagerrated. The FT's probably want to get on BBC etc. and thus need to hype it up. Locking people in rooms and threats to burn down the school with everyone in it? Doesn't sound Chinese to me. |

I doubt that this report is riddled with inaccuracies and hyperbole. After seven years in this country, almost nothing would surprise me. Education is seldom pursued for its intrinsic value; most Chinese students simply do not have the luxury to study what they want when they want. It's utilitarian for them to the extreme, and usually by necessity. Desperate measures leads to desperate behavior. The poster from Shenzhen lives in a "model" city far removed from these nasty realities.
The sad fact is that many Chinese youth almost regard study abroad as an entitlement if they can afford it. To suddenly be denied that chance, even for just cause, would enrage more than a few. This is the supreme paradox for they would have no expectations of the same from their own government or private-run schools. |

| Yep, I tend to agree with rickinbeijing. Nothing in the article surprises me very much. |

| Some time ago I mocked Roger for his information and reference to "14 thugs," but there it is in print. My apologies to you, Roger. |
