Hi,

...I'll be arriving very shortly to the Taipei airport. I thought
it would be a cinch to call ahead and get a confirmation number
and have a little economy car waiting for me. No way.

...travel agents are surprised when I tell them to go ahead
and try for themselves, only to have them get back to me
saying "I'll be darned, I can't raise a rental car company
there either.

..rental car company representatives like hertz and avis,
chuckle at me, push all the buttons on their computer, then
get back to me and say "gee, I dont know what to tell you
sir, I guess we dont have a location there".....

..the only thing I can google is something called "car hire"
but there's no real instructions on how that works.

...I've got some heavy bags, two trunks and two
smaller carry-alls........I'm not looking forward to
lugging them to, on, and off a bus if I can help
it.

I'm going to need to get from the Taipei airport down to
Tainan City.
Can anybody give me some info or ideas?

do you know how far it is from Taipei to Tainan? you'd be looking at probably close to a 3-4 hour drive.

have you ever driven in Taiwan before? also very important, as if you've never dealt with the scooter traffic, you could be in for quite a shock.

to the best of my knowledge, the major car rental agencies do not operate in Taiwan, I have a local guy i book a van through, but he only has like 4-5 cars and a few vans....

might i suggest taking a taxi to the Hi Speed Train....might be your best bet?
