Hey there everybody. I am currently in Brazil and finding the work situation a little protectionist even though I have a CELTA. I was planning on teaching here for three or four months but, now I am thinking of heading to B.A. Does anyone know if there might be work for a guys with dreads, CELTA, three to four months, and a dream? I would love any help that might be out there. Thanks a lot.
peace,

three to four months |
Heheh... Institutes won't hire you for three or four months. Well, you might be REALLY lucky and get a 3-4 months contract, but I think it's highly unlikely. Some people lie about this and leave after a short while, though.
Then, there's privates. It always takes a while to find privates, but it's doable. Beware, though - ALL of your students will offer you a Spanish/English exchange and will try to bargain to get a better price (well, maybe not, but all of mine did)! |

Enjoy Iguazu, fcking amazing, they make Niagra look like a dwarf pssing into a bucket...
As for getting a job for a few months, if you don't tell the institute you'll be leaving so soon they may hire you but that doesn't help other native speakers when they try to get a job and genuinely want to stay a long time. The school will have been scared off.
Also, i honestly think that having dreads will be a major issue here in Buenos Aires (and Argentina as a whole). Portenos are incredibly obsessed with fashion and looking smart. I can't remember seeing a single Argentine with dreads, only foreigners. You'll also probably be seen as a drug user/dealer. And drugs here are very much frowned upon or at least not spoken about like in england, the US etc. Having a spliff or snorting coke are pretty much seen as equal. Not that drugs don't exist here..they certainly do and the effects are visible every weekend if you go clubbing (although, to be honest, the quality is p*ss poor and not worth the outlay ) Long hair is fine, dreads i think are really pushing it...
Private classes are possible although it can take a month or more to get enough to see you through.
Good luck though,
Matt |

Thanks for the info. I am in town now (San Telmo) and I have already seen several argentines with dreads here. I guess that I will just have to see what happens as I dont think Ill be cutting off the hair anytime soon.

What's the big deal with the hair? Would you turn down a job if someone asked you to cut the dreadlocks? Just asking... |
