I have to renew my visa soon and will be needing to get a letter of release from my former sponsor. I've never actually gotten one of these before... What information exactly should it contain? What should they write?

Basically, they state that you are no longer employed by them and the date which your employment ended. Short, simple document.

That's what it always appears to be called in English - in Japanese it's a rishokusho, literally "parting from work certificate".
All it'll say is that you were employed there, the dates and that you left in an appropriate manner. Occasionally there are tales of former employers getting awkward about providing it, but as I understand it, they can't refuse it, so I'm fairly sure you'll be ok. |

| When I finished at Nova, the only hitch was the length of time. My request had to go through "proper channels", so it took about a week or so to arrive. I've heard of some people waiting for more than 2 weeks. Might want to keep that in mind in case your renewal date is coming up soon. |

| Thanks for the replies guys... The first time I renewed my visa I didn't have the letter but it was OK. They still renewed my visa. I just had to explain to immigration WHY I couldn't provide them with the letter. The second time I renewed my visa, it was with the same employer so I didn't need one. This time it's a different employer and I thought I'd do the right thing and get one. The boss of the company who previously sponsored my visa is probably the laziest person in the world so I know it's going to be a struggle to get it. Oh well... |

ripslyme was very lucky to get the letter of release from Nova within a week- I had made numerous phone calls and sent emails to Nova over 2 MONTHS and still didn't get it- finally, with only a few days before my visa expired, totally stressed out because I thought I couldn't renew my visa without it, I went down to the immigration office and explained the situation. They told me it was "probably okay" and that they would contact me if they needed any more paperwork.
A week later I had my visa extension- no thanks to Nova! |
