Any of you professionals out there want to share your tips for getting around on the forum?

How much time do you actually spend here? Do you ever make it past page 2? How often do you read an entire thread? Or do you just jump on the end and add a quick comment? Can you download threads to read off-line?

You know, if it isn't revealing anything secret.

I spend too much time here. I usually read most of the posts contained within each thread, as sometimes, they get off track sometimes. To be honest, if a thread is already on page 3 or 4, unless the topic really interests me, I don't bother. I also find that some people tend to have 3 or 4 way conversations in some threads, so even if you do comment, no one pays any attention. Wink

As for downloading for offline reading, I have no clue. I read what I need to when on here and don't bother. If there is info in a thread, I will cut/paste in to Word or Notepad and print it out.

I also only tend to go to about 3 forums. Sometimes, I check out the newbie forum to see if there anything I can help with, but not as much as the other 3 I check.

P.S. how do you like Russia? I have a friend teaching there and she is leaving after 2 years in June. She'll miss it loads. I loved my holiday there.

Russia's all right. I have a lot of contacts here now, which lowers the cost of living considerably. I live in a small town (I'd live in a village if I could) but I could go to Moscow, theoretically, and probably make decent money. I keep thinking about going to America to work (lots of people talk about that here, going to America to make a little money). But I'd probably be better off to go to Moscow (though I don't really want to go to Moscow or America so much.

Foods great, even for a vegetarian.

My biggest problem is that I'm sort trapped here as a lifer, cause I have a Russian family.

But it's a good place.

I've been here about six months. Most threads get rediscussed fairly often so, if you just read the new ones you will find that you'll have read most of the forum just with those after a good few months.

You'll get the hang of it.

I also only read three forums.

My Russian students have warned me against ever going to Moscow. In fact, they have made me promise that I will never go teach there. Confused

I have an acquaintance in Moscow. She says the Muscovites are a bit pushy, but what do you want, it's a big town. Anyway all the Russians are over here now. You want pushy, try TO!

She also said she's getting out of ESL to do other stuff.

Hmm, well this one got off topic pretty fast. My fault I guess.

Capergirl, I can see that your Russian students in Canada would warn you off from Moscow. A highly self selected group of individuals for one thing, Russians who move to Canada.

But even people here who would never immigrate have strong feelings about Moscow.

Yeah, big city pushiness but also how many nuclear power stations within city limits? How many superfund sites within city limits? They say Moscow is another country.

No place to raise kids. Only a place to work. A lot of people I know work there because they have to.

All said, though it isn't my least favorite city. There are things I like about it. And now that darker skinned folks are getting targetted by the cops, I never get stopped (never thought I'd see the bright side to racial profiling).

But seriously, as two of the most professional of professionals, what are your tips?

If you are interested in reading posts offline, you might want to give Offline Explorer a chance...I have never used this application, but I have been meaning to try it.

About an hour at most on average 20 mins once or twice a week. i try to avoid getting too embroiled in the personality agreements and disputes. I like to follow the progress of the occasional troller. this can be time consuming. most info is on the first page and normally by known posters so you need to aquaint yourself with the posters whose style you appreciate and skip the rest. As shmooj says you'll get thwe hang of it it is repetetive. Explore the sites for your research area find one for fun and one for progress.
