Hi!

I'm wondering if any of you teachers out there have experienced living in Bogor . . . . . or if you've just visited, then that would be of interest to me also. I'm just trying to get a feel for the place to see if I might like living there. Thanks for your info!

It's the rain capital of Java.

Get things done in the morning because once the rain starts - the day is over. Nice place though and you can take the train to Jakarta easy enough.

its not as nice as it was a year ago more traffice, pepole and bulidings, but its still nice and the express train to jakarta is very good (only 7 a day) other trains are many times very packed.

all in all, i would work there if i found a good job

Bogor is one of the wonders of the [Indonesian] world.

One poster said Bogor isn't as nice as it was a year ago. I say it isn't as nice as it was 34 years ago (when I first visited).

But it's still far more pleasant than almost any other city in Indonesia.

If the job you've been offered is at EF Bogor I have it on good authority that the place is a real sausage factory: conveyor belt type teaching with students as 'product'.

Which EF in Jakarta pays 10 million per month? I'm assuming you're talking about a standard contract.

The school is professional. Actually the teachers stay a long time there, rather than just one year, indicating satisfaction. The pay is low, but who would work in a language school for the money?

The city is packed with angkots, it has a new mall, lots of factory outlets, and the air is much cleaner than JKT. It rains for about an hour a day in the afternoon, which is very refreshing in a tropical country.

Five million in Bogor sounds fine. I thought it was way less than that.

Some really nice people work there too.

I didn't note the name of the poster but I want to say something about the Rp.5,000,000 monthly salary at EF in Bogor.
If that's the going rate well all fine and good but please don't do cartwheels over it.
It's people like you who perpetuate the belief that some employers in ESL schools have: being, that the skills which teachers bring to their jobs are worth so little. I've been privy to the net margins some schools have.
I am incredulous of (and will blow a rasberry at) anyone who says that schools pay what they can afford. They pay what people will accept.
Now to the poster who said "(but) who would work in a language school for money anyway".
Listen man don't get me wrong. I love my job but the money and job satisfaction are equal factors in my motivation to teach ESL. Mercenary? Absolutely not. A realist? Absolutely yes.
Don't set bad examples for the underlings. O.K?

Yes I often scold my Indonesian architect and laywer friends for accepting starting salaries that go from 1.5 - 2.5 million. Shame on them!

Only the other day I had a row with my maid because she didn't complain about the 300 grand she gets from me.

Teaching is such a difficult and skilled profession too. Sometimes I wonder how I manage day in day out to match my wits against all those teenagers and preschool kids who have been studying English since they were in kindergarten.

It's almost like brain surgery without the brains.

It ruins your day does it? what the hell do you do from 5-7 every evening? you can do everything you want in the day and pop off to the wonderful world of spectrum at night! what other things could you possibly want to do! anyway the place is nice and clean and the people are friendly. come to bogor! it would be rude not to!

Good for you. You are well within your rights to scold these ingrates. They should be more appreciative.
I only have Indonesian female-friends (if you know what I mean) and they never talk about money -not their own anyway- so I don't know how much they earn (annually).
You pay your slave (Woops typo) your maid 300 grand? US or AUS? Someone should've told you that's too much.
It gladdens my heart to hear that you agree that teachers are indeed skilled professionals.
How will we keep the underlings in check?
Alas I'm not sure we can. They will continue to bump others out of the race for a second interview because while you you were pitching for 8mil, they said 5mil would be more than enough.
