I read through several pages of posts, but no one's situation matched mine, so I'll present my unique position.
I have a BA in journalism. I was the editor of a smalltown newspaper for about 9 months.
I am earning an MA in English-Traditional Studies. I'll have it in December.
Come January, I have no ties. I am SERIOUSLY thinking about teaching English elsewhere.
I am learning Spanish now and would prefer to go to a Spanish-speaking country in order to further develop.
1. Since I'll have an MA in English, do I still need other credentials or certifications (I keep seeing TEFL and CELTA all over this board)?
2. Would I be better off trying for South America (and if so, which countries) or Spain?
3. Aside from this board, is there a good general introduction to this topic, such as a book or video?
4. How long does it take from the time you begin filing paperwork and such (visa, passport, etc.) until you can actually leave and get a job?
I have found out TONS from reading this board, but none of these questions have been answered.
Thanks
Danny

I can offer some general input on one specific issue: Spain. For a non-EU member citizen, you'll have a difficult time, even with your credentials, finding legal work. The job market is fairly tight, and it's nearly impossible to compete against relatively well-qualified Brits. The hiring process for EU member citizens is very simple - for non-EU it's a huge legal hassle.
It's pretty common to work illegally in Spain, but you may or may not wish to take that route. |
