I want to be able to type in Japanese on my computer. Ive installed the East Asian language package and the Japanese IME standard keyboard. So I can type in Japanese now, but my input method is only hirgana or katagana and since I dont have a keyboard with Japanese symbols on it, I have no idea which keys are which. I want to be able to input everything in romanji and then convert it, but cant figure out how to do this. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I'm running XP, and I actually just figured this out the other day. Under regional and language options, click the languages tab, and "details" under text services and input languages. Under preferences, click "language bar" and check the box for displaying the language bar on the desktop. Change the language from English to Japanese. Under input mode, you can choose hiragana or katakana. I type in romanji and it automatically converts. If you hit the space bar, you can change to kanji.

There might be an easier way, but this is how I figured out how to do it. If you're not running XP, then I can't be of much help... I hope I helped some! Smile

Yeah, so Ive got the language bar at the bottom of my screen, but it wont let me input the text in romanji. I can type in hiragana or katagana, but not romanji...it wont convert. So it looks like this nihongo but when i hit the space to convert, it just puts a space in....hmmm.....

I'm confused. Even Japanese computers use romaji to write. There is no syllabic keyboard. The conversion from romaji to hiragana should happen after each syllable and not the typing of the whole word.

Yeah, Im confused too. On Japanese computers, you can either insert the text using romanji or by direct hiragana following the Japanese symbols on the keys. When using romanji, the text should change after each symbol automatically like ya said. My doenst change...Ive played around with the settings, but it still doesnt work...

Ive never seen a computer that operated like a cell phone where you use A I U E O for one button and Ka Ki Ku Ke Ko for another and so on and so on...

...Basically you should have a language bar or icon somewhere that is enabled automatically when you log on, from there it is a simple matter or switching between Japanese and English, however, when in Japanese mod there will be many more options to choose from such as "Input Style" "Input Mode" "Conversation Mode"...

...If you do not have this language bar or icon anywhere, then it is not installed, if you cannot choose between the different mode settings, then it is not installed properly.

I know this is pretty vague info but without looking at your computer face to face I cannot really say much more.
