I am considering looking for work in Taiwan when my current contract expires in July. Right now I am working in China, and although I like my classes and co-workers, this town offers very little excitement. The main reasons I came to China was to get some teaching experience and learn Mandarin. Of course if I could save up some cash that would be nice as well.

It seems, that I can do all of the above in Taiwan but make much more money. Are there any advantages of China or Taiwan that I am not seeing?

Taiwan is a great place to both learn mandarin and teach. There is money to be made, but there is also competition. The job market is getting tighter. The good high paying job require a real commitment. The days of being a white face and showing up are over. You will work a few more hours. These are not really 16-20 hours a week job. I work 30/week (a little more then a lot of jobs) for $2000US plus apt, one meal/day, ARC, visa, insurance, plus there are a lot of other perks. This is the best paying job I have gotten in my three years here.

The cities are very active. There is almost always something going on. Transportation is cheap and easy. I live in Hsin-chu which is about an hour from Taipei. There are lively expat communities so making friends is quite easy. I find Taiwan very exciting. The small size makes it easy to travel to other parts.

If you are looking for more excitement, I suggest you find work somewhere between Taipei and Hsin-chu.
