|
|
I'm in Shenzhen now and my Visa here expires in ten days, I would like to visit Taiwan before I go back to Canada. Do I need to apply for any special visitor visa prior to going there, or is it like HK, where a Canadian passport will let me visit no problem. If so, how long can I stay as a visitor for? I am considering working in Taiwan and would like to see some of the best cities for English teaching.
Thanks in advance! |

If you are definitely planning to leave Taiwan before you start work a landing visa will work just fine here. You will get 30 days to play around.
You can negotiate a contract and whatever, but you can't get a landing visa converted to a resident's visa. Get a visitor's visa if you think you might just start work immediately without leaving. You can have that converted to a resident's visa if you have enough time.
If you find a school to teach with while you're here but still will go back you may be able to arrange to arrive straight away on a resident's visa. That will save you hassle when you get here. |

Landing visas are TWO WEEKS, not 30 days!
There are two types of vistors visas you can get before you come. One for 30 and one for 60 days. If you plan to work here you need the 60 day visa. If all you want to do is look around leave and then come back, no problem. When you do come back please remember to get a 60 visitor visa. |

That law has changed in the last 6 months. Canada and US resident's can get a 30 day visa-exempt entry.
However, I did make a mistake. This is not a landing visa, you just get a stamp in your passport. A landing visa is another thing here and requires a fee, but you can get it on the spot. Visa-exempt entry, like landing visas, are not extendable or transferable into resident visas. |

puiwaihin's post sums up my understanding of the current situation regarding landing visas and visa free entry. If you follow that information then I don't think that you will get into much strife! |

My co-workers family visited last month. They are from the US. Their visa free enrty (the landing permit) was for two weeks. That was what was stamped in their passports. They came through CKS airport.
I'm sorry. I think something strange is going on. |

Should have been thirty days. Strange. |

The issuance of visas on Taiwan is at the discretion of the issuing official.

As is the issuance of a visa to any country in the world. This comment doesn't seem very relevant. |
