Hear hear MR, I have to agree. With all the crap out there La Jornada is one of the few well-read newspapers in the world with any integrity.
I have an intermediate level that seem to have hit that plateau and are ready to take the next step in acquiring a higher level of English, that step of course being dependent upon them doing the legwork, putting the time and effort involved into exposing themselves to more and more English, outside the classroom.
At this point I like to use the example of myself, who upon arriving here had a fair to good level of Spanish. I could communicate quite fluently with all (well ok, maybe not so much the local Puerto Angel fishermen- still haven't figured that dialect out, except that 'berga' seems to be a very popular word) but found that reading La Jornada to be very trying. I'd never heard of it before, a Mexican prof recommended it I think. Do any of you old hats remember The News? I couldn't stand reading that drivel anymore so I kept with La Jornada and I can honestly say that my Spanish vocab has improved immensely as a result. Anyways the example being: the language of most newspapers is usually at an adequate level for intermediate learners and up, providing enough challenge that they will have to improve.

Am I mistaken or is there now an English version of La Jornada on line? Perhaps I could use some readings to inform some of the kids about whats going on with the 'desafuero'. The student body here, especially the local kids, are incredibly ignorant of the situation. The ones from DF and other bigger cities picked up a bit on the situation over semana santa. I think I'll smuggle in some 'no al desafuero' posters to rattle the ol' guy in charge.

Hi, DLC:

One of the most important parts of my learning Spanish, too, was reading La Jornada (in the hardcopy version in those days), especially the Sunday version with the literary supplement, and discussing the articles with a friend of mine who was teaching Psychology at the UNAM. I am a traditionalist, so whenever I can get the hardcopy version, I do. The rest of the time, I read it in Internet--like now, for example, when I am not in Mexico but in South America again.

Maybe one of the reasons you still have trouble with the PA guys could be that it's verga, not berga, that they use as an expletive in almost every sentence?

I am thinking that the "desafuero", ironically but also predictably-- given the political illiteracy of the Fox Gang--will result in AMLO becoming Mexico's president in 2006. (Wall Street believes this, and I hate to concur with the savage capitalists, but sometimes even the villains of the picture are right....)

Why not bring in some posters? I always did whatever I wanted there--and nobody ever said boo about it....
