I'll do this check with my morning classes: after they hand in their papers, the first class will write an abstract and the second class will do a verbal summary.
I'm only trying to get original work rather than what they memorized 5 years ago.
In the afternoon class, I will make them re-submit anything I don't think is original.
My school's a buxiban parading as a uni. and I'm just trying to get them to learn so they can write reports in English rather than work on the factory floor.

Some students may submit essays which contain the exact same words and ideas. When you point it out, they will say it is original, it is their own work but that "they worked with classmates". The idea of plagarism in the mind of a Chinese student extends only as far as a work being copied from the net, or a book...not from another student's paper.
Copying of other student's writing will be easy to spot.
If you want to go the extra 10,000 miles, you could take the time to use an anti-plagarism software and run individual papers through the programs. You could try a program Wcopyfind, which compares two texts for similarities. It works well for spotting plagarism between two documents (compare one text file to another).
For finding plagarised material in a student composition on the internet you could try using Plagarism-Finder. It searches the net for sources in a text file being analysed and provides any links to websites that contain similarities.
The problem with using these programs in China is that most students use longhand to do their assignments. To compare the documents you would have to create a computer text file from the students work yourself to use the programs.
One easy way to spot plagarism is to be familiar with what course books and material your students use for other classes. Many times students copy from books they may use in a class other than yours.

Frisk them when they come in. They often bring pages ripped out of the book and copy them word for word. They will have them under the essay book. I suggest you check under the essay notebooks before you begin. |

A qualified "yes" to the question in your poll; SOME can, but the majority can't because they have never learnt that. Here, learning is a communitarian experience, and students "help" students; often teachers do the same...
THeir goal is to regurgitate verbatim what they had to study before; original and creative work is not the norm. You have to reward the individuals and punish the herd. |

Very few of these student will be in a position where they need to write original material. Most will grow up to work in the business and banking industry. They will be regurgitating facts and figures in a logical and grammatical order, or they will be translating memos and reports from Chinese to English or vis-versa.
A lot of these student don't see the need or use of originality. You may need to give them a practical application to create some enthusiasm. |

One of my ex-colleagues gave out an assignment to write a movie review. He warned them that copied work would get a failing grade. He found it easy to spot the plagerized ones. He then typed in the first line of the paper and did a web search.
With the administrations consent, he made the students who cheated redo that part of the course while their honest fellow students were out finding jobs - it was their last semester before graduating. |
