I will be traveling to Osaka on September 8 (teaching with AEON) and was wondering how accessible Kansai airport is for luggage. Are there alot of luggage carts that I can borrow/rent because I will have two duffle bags that do not have wheels. Also, are there many escalators that I will have to drag my bags on?
Thanks

You will be able to pick up luggage carts after you pass through immigration and go into the customs hall. Until then you have to carry your bags. There are some escalators just after you get off the plane (there is a shuttle train that takes you down to the immigration hall) and an escalator before you arrive in the customs hall. Luggage carts are free and can be found next to the luggage conveyor belts. |

You go through immigration control (there is a line for non-Japanese) after you get off the plane, go down escalator to the customs hall, pick up your bags off the moving belt and there will be a row of customs officers on the other side. I have never been checked as far as i can remember but I'm a long term resident. Usually they are pretty cool about opening bags at baggage check. After that the doors to the arrival hall are in front of you. |

The baggage carts are free but they are a bit smaller than ones I've used in other countries. There are lifts that accomodate the carts. Kansai is a very easy airport to navigate. |

you can get a cart at baggage claim.
Then you can take the elevator to go up so you can get to the place where you buy train tickets, if you want to take a train.
You can use the cart until you enter the ticket gate at JR. Then, you can take the escalator to go downstairs where you can wait for the train.
No reason to worry. |

Thanks! I was also wondering about what type of luggage to bring. I was planning to bring duffle bags since I would be able to fit more things since the duffle bags weigh less than regular suitcases. Did anyone find that it was easier to use suitcases or duffles? |

suitcases with wheels are nice since you can pull them, or if you have a couple you could push them. I think a green army bag you can wear like a backpack plus one suitcase with wheels is the way to go.
with suitcases you can open them up and it is easy to find stuff but with duffle bags, clothes get wrinkled and you have to dump out stuff in order to find anything.
Having duffle bags sucks when you are using hotels, or traveling around from place to place, and you end up tossing stuff on the bed in order to find things like clean socks, deoderant etc. but with suitcases it is easy to find things.
Heavy suitcases suck when you have to go up and down stairs but are fine if you can find elevators or escalators. |
