G'day guys,

I shall be in Japan soon. A slightly experienced, sort of qualified, young 'Ostrayan'! and soon to have spouse visa. I'll be in Kitakyushu city (1 million people), 45 minutes away from downtown Fukuoka city.

Everyone says it's mumma mia! impossible to get a job in Fukuokaaaa! (and maybe kitakyushu also.....?) I like a challenge though.....

But anyhows....I have to think of all possibilities. If privates become the only way I can make a living for a while, I need to know about 'em!

So guys and girls, how much to charge?, do most long-term teachers in Japan do 'em?, are they easy to get?, how to get them?, bla bla etc.

-'Tedanhi gamsa hamnida' ('domo arigato gozaimasu' in Korean.....I'm in Korea now)

...thank you....

-Jezza

How much to charge? whatever students are willing to pay you. The more you charge the less phone calls you will get from prospective students.

I charge 3,000 yen for a 60 minute lesson.

You get' em through teacher-search sites such as http://www.findateacher.net, flyers, word of mouth, ads in a community center and pirating them from your conversation school job.

Whether its "easy" depends on : where you look; what you charge; whether you are appealing as a teacher to your students; accessability and availability; friendliness; your teaching methods. What you offer over the competition in terms of "service" and value for money.

I charge between 4000 to 6000 yen per hour. Demand is a consideration where I live, people are calling me weekly and I have had to turn down considerable offers.

So far I have been teaching at my students' homes, but recently worked out a deal with the local church to use their facilities on weekday afternoons for a very nominal fee which of course will be passed on to my students.

It will take time to get established. As for myself, living in my small community for the first couple of years I was too preoccupied with the completion of my MA in TESL to take on too many private classes combined with my regular working schedule. Then I initially only began teaching friends and their children.

I am now at the point, however, where I think I need to set up an entrance interview (in some kind of informal interview with both the parents and their kids), as I've found that some moms just seem to be using me to take care of their kids for an hour while they go out and do some shopping. 4000yen between eight kids only works out to 500yen per lesson per student. I find the moms seem to think this is a good deal to have some peace and quiet do some their grocery shopping.

Good luck, but don't count on it being your regular income. As for myself it is a nice subsidy as it turns in about 150,000yen a month on average for ten classes per week although months with holidays are much lower. Not a yen in July and August for example, although this is my choice to enjoy the summer months.
