I will most likely teach in NYC (secondary) in September and was wondering if any of you have some helpful hints, suggestions, recommendations when working there. I'm not too sure which borough I will be working in but would like to prepare myself (as much as I can do here...). I have heard some good and difficult experiences but like to know more.
Thanks,
Theresa |

hey there. i taught in the nyc bd of ed for six years but i've been in japan for the last four. they might've changed some requirements but it's usually pretty easy to get a job, especially in schools that are in less than great neighborhoods.
i have an english degree but my first job was teaching science in a high school. i also taught english, special ed, art, health and history at different times. a good way to get your foot in the door is to substitute at different schools. the pay is pretty good (maybe $100-$120 a day) and the work is way easy.
you'll need to go to the board of ed offices in brooklyn to get fingerprinted and to get a file number. after that, you can start looking for work.
there's more info but i've gotta get to work. if you have any q's, let me know and i'll try to help you.
good luck!
peace...howie |
