Hi all,
I'm considering trying to find work in Shanghai, but I'm very concerned about the number of bad reports coming out of China.
I'm still a relatively new teacher with 2 years experience (1 year as a Senior Teacher) in teaching TEFL in Indonesia, but I feel experienced enough that I don't want to join a 'joke' school.
Anybody have any good schools or Universitys I could contact?
The only semi-offer I have had so far is from Kai En English Language Centre who have offered a salary between 8,200-10,040. Could I live comfortably on that in Shanghai? Researching the school on here though doesn't give me many good impressions. |

Omen,
Not to be rude, but if you can't even commit yourself to teaching in Shanghai, arguably the most modern city in mainland China, with Western amenities galore, you would be very hard pressed to survive the cultural shock.
If you've never taught in a Chinese university before, your chances of landing a job at one in Shanghai are slim to none unless you have a CV a mile long or happen upon a desperate minor college at just the right moment.
You can, however, check out www.chinatefl.com for leads to private schools in the "Paris of the East."
Indeed, you can live on 8000 RMB nicely, even in high rent Shanghai unless you expect a penthouse overlooking the Bund or Pudong. What should be a more pressing question is how many hours are you willing to put in to earn that figure? It may not be worth it.
If perchance you want to experience the real China, you'd better bypass Shanghai. |
