Also see the KITLV site at:

http://www.kitlv.nl/hisdoc.html

It has 125,000 photographs, relating mainly to Indonesia before 1957.

From the 1890s to the 1970s. When you click on a pic the year comes up in the code.

If any of you ever have the chance to visit the KITLV in Leiden, it's a great place. The whole University of Leiden is wonderful, but KITLV has long been one of the major world centres for things Indonesian.

Leiden's libraries, museums, academic programmes and frequent performances are very stimulating!

Yup, Leiden is very interesting, and so also is the Royal Tropical Museum in Amsterdam. For those who are feeling homesick for Indonesia, they even had a warung on display, and kaki limas outside! Bakso anyone?? Murah dan sehat!

For those folk interested in older photos of Indonesia, a good book is 'Tempo Doeloe'. It's way out of print, but there may be a library holding it.

It has photos of Batavia in the 1930s, and parks, gardens and greenery, where there are now car parks and government buildings. Even the quite ugly Kota train station, once looked nice with lawns around it.

When I visited the Tropical Museum in Amsterdam, I asked if they had old photos of Ujung Pandang. I was directed to the appropriate building, and the records were amazing. Top Secret stuff from WWII, showing the allied attack plans, photos of the street I lived in. If you're visiting the Netherlands, spend a day in these places.

Slightly Ironically, I used to live in Holland - before I had any interest in Indonesia, so needless to say, I completely missed out on these places. Darn!

Indeed, guruengerish!!

The Tropical Institute in Amsterdam has my favourite museum in the world. Those Indonesian, Indian, and African street replicas are so detailed and atmospheric.

And the food in the cafe is great, too! The Institute building also houses a theatre that is one of the major venues in Holland for film and other performance.

Anyone who loves Indonesian food will love the Netherlands. There are Indonesian restaurants even in the small towns. In Amsterdam, you can eat in a different Indonesian restaurant twice a day for several weeks.

I was in Jakarta for a first time flying visit last month, the sky was blue, everything was lush and green, there was no air pollution to speak of, people were so incredibly nice and friendly and helpful, service was cheerfull and efficient. I could go on but suffice to say I was left with a very good impression of Jakarta as mostly a beautiful city.
Did I just get it on a good day or is it really like that?

I didn't know there was a Jakarta on Mars. No, actually I love Jakarta. It's often misunderstood and gets a bad press. The traffic jams are a nightmare, but that goes for a lot of large cities.
