You can buy amoxcicillin and amoxcyllin capsules over the counter. They are broad spectrum abtibiotics and therefore can be used for a large range of conditions. I've used them for chest infections and they work fine. There are a few "fake" antibiotics around, so if you find that you aren't "getting better" in a few days you should switch brands. I have found the ones that are made in Hong Kong to be the best. if your condition persists you should bite the bullet and see a doctor as you don't want to take too many courses of antibiotics.

Be verrry careful, there are a lot of bogus pharmaceuticals about. A few of us have had persistant infections because of this. If something doesn't work, try something else.

I can't stress this admonishment enough. Far worse than completely fake drugs are adulterated (weak) pharmaceuticals. As a result of not knowing the high incidence of fake and adulterated medications in China, I suffered a persistent sinus infection for eight months (one that would have been eradicated in one week with real antibiotics). Consequently, I have now established a permanent resistance to Azithromycin and Amoxicillin and can never benefit from these very effective antibiotics again.

Be very, very careful. Military and university hospital pharmacies, followed by large drugstore chains are the most reliable. Stay completely away from small, local shops. In the event you are faced with several manufacturers offering the same product at dramatically different prices, purchase the most expensive version available.

In addition, Chinese physicians do not completely understand or know how to prescribe Western antibiotics. Because of their predominant background in traditional Chinese medicine (i.e., herbs that when prescribed in large doses could be toxic), they typically prescribe antibiotics in the same homeopathic manner; one that allows the bacteria to eventually defeat the antibiotic. NEVER take a Western antibiotic as prescribed by a Chinese physician; check the Internet or your pharmacist back home for proper dosing and length of treatment.

True story that happened to me this week. I have been sick for the past four weeks. It comes and goes but lately it is the coughing and the mucus coming out when I spit (the color is darkening). Typically at home some Cipro, Bioxin, or other broad spectrum anti-biotic works.

So I go to a local pharmacy and buy two boxes of "Amoxycillin" capsules, 250mg made in Hong Kong.

I read a post on another thread and the poster warned me about fake drugs. So I went to the manufactures WWW site and found no listing that they made this drug. The Internet said like 50% of all OTC drugs are counterfeit.

So I take them. 2 capsules. About 9pm. By 11 pm I was so wired I could not get to sleep until about 4 am. However, my sinuses were completely dry and open. Hmmm. A quick search on the Internet says that many times anti-biotics are filled with sudefed or something similar.

What ever was in my box of "The United Laboratories LTD" "Amoxycillin" was not an anti - biotic.

A fellow at the university told me to go to the hospital pharmacy and I would do better.

Scary huh? I'm just happy it wasn't rat Poisoning .

If I understand your post, you knew before you took the pills that the supposed manufacturer did not make such pills, yet you still took them.
That is scary.

By the way i did get an email from the Hong Kong maker who directed these queations to the Mainland office - no reply yet.

The girl in the initial post has HPV (genital warts). Suggested treatment from the hospital has been to cut (freeze) the warts. does anyone know of a medicine-based treatment. Anything other than the very expensive creams which are self-administered?

There are several approaches to treatment. Go to a medical university and pick up a good book such as Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment, edited by Tierney, McPhee, and Papadakis. You could also try a Merck Manual.

HPV has an uncomfortably close relationship with some types of cancer, so it is not something with which to fool around. Being a virus, antibiotics are useless in treating HPV.

I would never trust antibiotics or any other form of medication in China or in any other part of the developing world. I had a Canadian doctor prescribe various antibiotics for chest and intestinal infections before I came to China. I had the prescriptions filled in a Canadian pharmacy and brought the medicine with me. I also brought needles with me, just in case. I'm a bit paranoid, I admit it, but with these things I always feel it's better to be safe than sorry.

I would suggest telephoning your western doctor at home, describing the symptoms to him and getting him to send you the medicine. You will need to convince him that Chinese medicine is dangerous or unreliable at best. It's all fine and good buying a pirated CD but buying fake Avelox (for bronchitis) is another matter.

Somehow burning off genital worts sounds a bit sketchy.

A man who'd been in the American navy disclosed to me that he had his warts burnt off but this was back in the 80s.

I used 18% undiluted iodine to get rid of some warts that I had on my hand.

PLEASE: there is no connection between the two wart stories.

medicine comes in ahead of burning here:
