hello. i've been teaching uni in korea for 4 years and want to make a move to japan. through the expat teaching community over here, i've heard that uni jobs in japan are very difficult to get. so, i'm looking for the next best thing. i want to teach adult conversation classes, but most of the language schools i've checked out in japan are both children and adults. i have 4 yrs efl experience, young american, b.a. in english literature, don't speak japanese, and am not currently residing in japan. and i can't do JET because i don't live in america. what's the best teaching job i could expect? thanks. |

Pabo, with a BA you wouldnt even qualify for uni jobs anyway. Masters is a minimum if you even want an interview.
Probably a conversation school, teaching as an ALT at a dispatch company or a high school is your best bet. Most such jobs dont require Japanese ability but you need to be in Japan to attend interviews.
You dont have to live in America to go on JET but you would have to fly back to the States for the initial interviews and fly out with other JETs in August. |

i appreciate the information. i knew i didn't have a shot for a uni job, just wanted to find a good job. i'm curious about the ALT jobs. i read a bit about them and i think they dispatch you out to high schools and companies to assist in english lauage teaching, right? so, you would be working for a certain ALT company, and teaching at a couple different places through them.
and, i'm trying to avoid having to return home to the states or go to japan for an interview because of money and time. is it really very difficult to get hired without a face-to-face interview. are there recruitment agencies, (i think maybe westgate does this), that will recruit you without being in your native country? would conversation schools hire you without an interview? thanks again.
