Hi everyone! I am considering teaching in Japan this fall and I heard about the company Altia Central on this website. It sounds like it might suit my needs. I am a teacher and I do not want to work for a large English conversation school with people of all ages. I enjoy working with children and I want to work in a school setting. I am wondering if anyone has or is currently working for this company and could share their experiences. Or perhaps you have another company to recommend? Thanks. Very Happy
Laura

There was a thread about ALTIA a while ago. It is a good place.

Good points.

1. your apartment key money and deposits are paid by the company. Paid, not lent to you and taken out of your salary later.

2. You get a company car to use

3. you get about 11 or 12 weeks vacation a year.

4. no problems with late pay or any nickel and dime BS about insurance etc.

5. You get follow up training, support, curriculum materials, etc.

6. you are pretty much left alone once you go to your schools. Nobody looking over your shoulder.

7. IF you are in the Nagoya area, the meetings usually involve going to the Hilton for the Indian Curry Buffet, or the Hard Rock for nachos. Paid for by the company.

8. Monday to Friday, 800 to 430 schedule. Saturday meetings maybe 4 times a year.

Its a good gig. If you can speak Japanese, think on your feet, and have a good personality it is the way to go.

Thanks for the info. Did you apply overseas or were you in Japan? I am just wondering how long the process may take. Also, do you know how long the contracts are for (eg. one year)? I couldn't seem to find it anywhere and as a teacher, it would be beneficial to be back in Canada early enough to find a job for next fall. 'Til next time....

Hi! The contracts are generally for one year, from April to the following March. However, sometimes if you start in the middle of the year, you will have a shorter contract that will also end in March of the next year. That way, all the contracts will co-ordinate with the school year in Japan.

You can apply either overseas or in Japan. I think most people apply in Japan. They have either JET or eikaiwa experience.
