Just wondered if anyone has had any dealings / information about either HESS or Jumpstart ..
Even better, anyone working for them now ?
Thinking of moving over from the mainland ..so any advice on good FT employers would be appreciated.
Cheers |

There are lots of good FT employers. And most of them aren't chain schools.
You gotta look around.
Coming from abroad, if you have no money or time to spare, then probably anything, even an agent, is OK. |

Hess recruits mainly from overseas, as they have representives in various countries who will do the initial telephone interview first before you travel to Taiwan. My friend has worked for HESS for nearly 4 years. He ended up with lots of work. Kindergarten and language school. So big potential to make money however, as you will spend a lot of time preparing for the lessons you will be tired, your week will be busy. But if you want to make money well you will fit in.
Hess organises everything for you. After being accepted, and the documentation needed for the visa is organised, you will fly to Taiwan. What happened to my friend was on arrival he was taken to a hotel in preparation for some training. This ranges from 3 days (express) to a few weeks! Hotel is paid by Hess (room only). Training is done in groups. After that the school you will be going to either picks you up or you fly, go by train/bus to the city where you will be teaching.
After arrival at your destination, the school usually puts you up in a hotel (or similar) for a day or two until suitable accomodation is found.
Hess head office seems to be well organised and efficient however, as many of the schools are Hess franchises, these standards are not always met.
There you are! Hope this helps. |

Hess is stable, pretty much above-board, and pays about the average.
You can do better, but they are a safe bet. |

My one semester contract teaching here in New Zealand expires next week. Is it possible to find work at any of these schools in July? |

HESS pays below average. In fact I have never even seen any other school who pay less than what they do. |

mmmm...its not that bad! Lots of schools there pay the same or worse!! How about NT$400 hour, thats lower than Hess NT$560 per hour.
The one thing about Hess is that they often give you HEAPS of hours (Taipei) = $ but you will be tired . |

Would it be better to arrive in Taiwan as a free agent? A trip from NZ may bb a wee gamble, but if the prospects are good... |

Care to explain the basis for this comment, rather than just directing people to your website, which by the way doesn't expand on this comment with any information anyway.
The fact is the chain schools are the best place for newbies to start out. Everything is taken care of, you are pretty well protected from legal strife, you get training, you get a decent number of hours, and you know that you will get paid. There are very, very few downsides to newbies working for the chain schools. |

$560 an hour? They didn't offer this much to me. Well..... it is still below average anyway but only by a little. Which school tried to offer $400? I know I have been offered some ridiculously bad positions or contracts with some really bad clauses in them.
You can always arrive in Taiwan as a free agent and if jobs don't exactly fall on your lap you can hook up with a chain school afterwards. But if you spend one month (unsuccessfully) looking for the right school then that is one whole month of not working (but still spending money). Maybe it will only take you a couple of days to find the right job. Maybe it will take a bit longer. |
