Hi,
I'm thinking about teaching in a summer camp for the North America-China Culture Exchange Program. This would be my first experience teaching abroad. Does anyone know anything about this program?
My real concern is their request that I mail my passport to them (in China). Is this normal?
I'd appreciate any helpful advice.

I assume you mean mail the passport to them in China?
If so, no way. Don't even think about it. I don't care who tells you to do it, don't do it. |

NO WAY! This is not normal and beyond what anyone would believe.
Are you sure they didn't mean a copy?
That sounds nuts and actually you sound very naive. Your very next action should be to email them and ask " ARE YOU F'ING KIDDING???"
An American passport would fetch big bucks here.
You NEVER mail your passport anywhere. And you NEVER let anybody hold onto it.
That goes for everybody reading this. You are required BY LAW (though generally not in practice) To have your passport on you at all times. If anyone , school, employer, asks to hold your passport this is what you explain to them. That NO WAY do they get to hold your passport as by law you need it.
Do you have a website for this organization, I did a google search and came up blank. |

They most certainly don't expect you to mail your passport from the U.S.A.; what they most probably want is a photocopy with a picture of you.
I see no harm in supplying such copies. To some extent, your photogenic quality will decide whether you are "wanted" for this stint. |

Neleh! Do not inquire back whether they wanted you to send your actual passport or not! You either must have misunderstood them "big time" or their English was as poor as my Chinese. SCAN YOUR PASSPORT AND SEND THE COPY VIA EMAIL OR FAX YOUR PASSPORT COPY TO THEM! The copy of course shall be the front page with your pic!
Cheers @ good luck! |

I agree with Englishgibson....but just in case you have gone back and re-read the ad or offer and you still think that it CLEARLY asks you to send your passport to them....If you could please post the name of the school and/or service that sent you this info here, and if you can copy/paste the message so that someone here can either verify and tell the people involved that they have a typo and need to correct their message or someone can verify if this is some attempt to scam you and possibly others. |

Hi,
Thank you for your responses. I did make a mistake in my original post in that the passport was requested by the program's office in Buffalo, NY and not by anyone in China. I wrote to the director of the program and I was told that I could apply for the visa on my own, and thus my passport *copy* was not needed. |
