I've recently completed my TEFL Certificate, having worked for the past 10 years or so in ecology. I am educated up to PhD standard (again in ecology). I shall be moving to Egypt in August as my wife is Egyptian and wondered about what the possibility is of finding a job.

I'm not looking to earn a great deal - basically, I want to get some experience and interact with new people. A part-time position would suit fine. Do I have much of a chance of finding work? What sort of salary should I ask for (as I know some request a ballpark figure)?

Any other advice would be great.

Blackadam,

In your position, you don't get to 'ask,' you just get paid the going rate, which will be a pittance. I doubt that you would get a salary, but an hourly rate. You might want to read around this board to see pay in different cities discussed. Get a bit of experience at the language schools (ILI, British Council, AMIDEAST), get yourself known, and you can add private students eventually.

There is lots of information on this section of the board. Just not too many options for lucrative work.

No, uni positions pay a pittance and there is not a lot of demand for ecology in Egypt.

Not bothered about the pay to be honest - prefer part-time work anyway. It's more about experience and social life (I eventually want to lecture in the UK). BTW, I did actually work in Egypt as an ecologist before and know that it's a growing market. Egypt will soon become oil-rich (though with such a large population, it won't be like Qatar etc, just an alleviation of the depths of poverty) and even more scarce in water, so plenty of opportunity for environmental scientists. Anyway...back to the subject...

I wonder if AUC would be hiring any professors for this on a part time basis. I doubt that there is a major or minor in it, but you might be able to sell them on a course or two.

The advantage would be that part of the pay would be in US$.
