hi,

The subject line says it all. I am looking to gain an MA TESOL (or similar, for example Applied Linguistics) by distance from any accredited university.

I really don't want to start an argument on "quality". obviously i am on a strict budget, a case of beggars and choosers.

But if anyone knows of any program that is cheap cheap cheap please let me know.
Think of a counterfeit diploma hanging on your wall, well one step up from that please.

thanks in advance,
Eoin

You can try TEFL International. I heard they have an MEd course that is through a university in Thailand and is accredited.

It is less than $5000 US if you have a TEFL certificate already.

Sorry I don't have the link but do a google search for TEFL Intl MEd and I'm sure you'll find it.

Merlion, UNE is a whopping $12,000 AUS and from the sounds of it, way out of the price range of the OP. Besides, UNE has a good program and I am sure is a lot of work.

C'mon Gordon: the OP didn't say he/she wasn't willing to work hard, just that he/she is broke. Hey - I can relate!

When they say...:

I take it that quality is not on a top priority

Hey, I want a reasonable price too, but quality must count for something and I know they said not to discuss quality so I won't.

thanks for all the information so far.
I think I'm going to go with the instantdegrees.com, thanks Merlin. Very Happy

But seriously, I am willing to work hard for it. The line about the "counterfeit diploma" was tongue-in-cheek but what I meant about quality was that I have no concerns whatsoever about whether a degree from one university is more highly regarded than another, which seems to be a large debating point on this board.

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my initial posting.

I DO want something that challenges me, but I don't want to pay extra for any frills......I mean I've seen some that are $15,000-$20,000, and I don't know what they offer to justify that price, but it's out of my league unfortunately.

Maybe I'm wrong here, and correct me if I am, but if you are doing a degree by distance anyway, isn't it more about the individual, and not so much the institution?

If they are just telling me to read this book, and that article, well I'm of the opinion that a $5,000 university can do that just as well as one that is three or four times the price. Am I wrong?

Whoever said reasonable price summed it up for me pretty well. I can't afford any "extras".

So thanks for any suggestions made so far, and if there are any more out there, I am all ears.

WOW. I guess I should have got it back when it was $4000 US. Too late now. Wink

I'm sure they have a fine program.

Just make sure you use my link. I get 30% though their affiliate program.

Exclamation JUST KIDDING Exclamation

Seriously, though,
Seems like the prices forthese degrees are going up as more and more people realize they want something but can't actually relocate to get it.

Here's an idea:
Maybe don't just go for a MATESL/App.Ling degree but maybe something that will keep your foot in the door of another field.
Educational technology?
educational psychology?
educational leadership?
All with an initial emphasis in TEFL that can later be applied to other environments if you choose to return 'back home'

You may find a cheaper "build your own degree" program.

Anyway, like was stated in the forum before - any reputable employer would be able to spot the scam.

Of course IMHO the irreputable ones get what they deserve.

But to bring this back to the original topic, my real opinion (no joke) is that these degrees commonly requested by certain employers (like applied Linguistics) are driving up the price for these programs. Much better to go for a cheaper "related degree" that will get you the same job.

Just brainstorming here:
English

Education
primary, secondary, tertiary
Adult Education
Professional Education
Special Education Twisted Evil
Education Leadership/Administration
Educational Technology
Curriculum and Instruction
Bilingual education

Cross-Disciplinary
educational Psychology

Linguistics
Linguistics
sociolinguistics

Speech pathology

ESL
Second Language Aquisition
Second language Studies
language testing

A lot of these distance education providers will let you build your own area of focus within a more general area of study. So lets say they can't grant a Masters in English Literature. What they do is allow you to study an area of English that deals considerably with philosophical ideals. They grant you an MA in Philosophy and somewhere on the degree they mention that it was in an English Literature area of concentration.

Reputable Universities do this when they want to start up a new department and don't have enough PhDs in that area. How do you think we got all these women's studies departments when no one had a PhD in the subject 30 years ago? They started the department through cross-polination, so to speak. I remember when I was studying at UH Manoa they were starting up a new "Peace Studies" degree.

So think inexpensive hybrid degrees that aren't yet in vougue. Hell, you might even get a scholarship due to lack of applicants in the area.

Maybe a Masters in women's studies with an area of concentration in cunning linguistics?
I know...GROAAANNNN
