Hello everyone,
I'm a regular on the Mexico board. I was at one point teaching ESL in Mexico and before that in the US. I still teach but it's all online now, in addition to some other online work, so I am free to live pretty much anywhere I can get a reliable high speed internet connection.
At this point I'm curious about Spain. Have lived in France for work and study, 7 or 8 years ago, so I'm familiar with "Europe", but neverr got to visit Spain. Having spent about 18 months in Mexico I'm kind of getting burned out on things here but would like to continue living in a Spanish speaking country. I'm basically fluent but feel certain aspects of Mexico are nigh unbearable so I'm just thinking of other places.
Basically, I'm curious about the cities in Spain. If you worked online and wanted to stay in Spain but were free to live in any of the cities, which would you choose and why? I'm being vague here... I need a variety of cultural activities and people, modest nightlife at least, i'm sure weather won't be an issue anywhere so we'll leave that out... fixed income with the possibility of personal tutoring if it were lucrative..
so, what are your impressions of Madrid, Sevilla, Valencia, Barcelona, Zaragoa, etc. in terms of livability?
Thanks for any input. |

Hey Matt,
Well, I work online and I love Madrid. It's the biggest "small town" I've ever been in. Each central neighborhood has it's own unique personality and is within walking distance of each other. Check out The Dibuk Online Neighborhood Maps of Madrid to get an idea for the different areas.
You said that you are interested in a "modest" nightlife at least...Well, in Madrid I modestly come home at 5 or 6am quite often. People love to party here. There's a great music scene, art scene...all kinds of stuff going on. It's like a Spanish New York, really....
The other place I've lived is Bilbao, Spain. Basically, imagine the geography of Ireland: Bilbao is greeeeeeeeeeen with sharp cliffs falling down to nudist beaches I'm not sure if you are familiar with El Pas Vasco, but its great. Check out the book Basque History Of The World for more info.
So to answer your question, there is a lot of work in Spain and Bilbao and Madrid are very livable. Do you have any other specific questions?
Phil
PS: don't expect Spanish food to be ANYTHING like Mexican food. Here, they think just black pepper is too spicy. |
