I have signed up to take an Oxford Seminar TESOL course this May as I do not have a degree (only 2 years of uni) and hope to teach english in Asia. I chose Oxford since the only other TESOL training in my city costs over $1000. However, I am worried because the Oxford Seminar offers only 60 hours in training (as opposed to 100 or 120). Is this enough? Has anyone out there taken the seminar and if so, did you feel it was worth it?

I have heard of this seminar and my only quarrel with it as opposed to a 100 to 120 hour course is that you do not get supervised practice teaching real non-English speakers. You practice your teaching on your classmates. I found the practice teaching I did with non-English speakers invaluable. I would definitely say spend the extra time and money for the experience. |

I took the 60 hour course with Oxford Seminars. I got hired without any problems. I'm not working in Mexico.
I know people who took the course with me who are in Asia. |

A lot of jobs train you once you arrive.
I have taken the Oxford course but have not started teaching yet, so I'm not sure how useful it was. However, I did find it quite useful and I thought that my teacher was very good. It's usually taught by someone who has taught abroad before so there are all kinds of tips that you can get. You also get tons of ideas for lessons as well as a bit of practicum. |
