I am going to be graduating from a UC next year I will have about 9 months to work with. I do not have a certificate and do not really want to spend the money to get one to teach for only 9 months. I would like to go to either China or Latin America because I know Spanish and would like to learn Mandarin. Is it realistic for me to find a job in one of these locations for 9 months?

There are plenty of 6-month jobs in China and many employers won't care about a TEFL certificate. You just need to realize that finding an employer that will be okay with both of those situations might leave you in a less-than-fabulous job. Some employers will be disinclined to get you a work permit because they are 1-year permits.

Do a lot of reading on here. It's easy to get taken advantage of and I think on the shorter term contracts there's a higher likelihood of funny business. If you seriously want to learn the language then you might be better off enrolling in a school for a term. If you're comfortable with working on a student visa then you'll have plenty of opportunities to take on work (evenings and weekends) without a contract.

I think Latin America is unlikely. The jobs openings are not as prolific there and the employers value more stability--basically a TEFL and a one year contract seems to be the minimum.

this is really interesting, so you are saying that Hispanic America has more strict reqs than China? What about Korea or Japan?

I'm not sure where you got that, but I didn't say it. There are fewer jobs available in Latin America and more people that want to teach there, so the employers are more picky. That's Economics 101.

I believe that all of the countries that you listed 'require' a bachelor's degree for a work visa. I'm not aware of any country that requires a TEFL certificate--that's something that employers use to assess the qualifications of applicants. Of course, some of these employers also run TEFL programs so they have a financial interest in requiring it.

I received an e-mail today from a school in Poland, in which the director informed me that a TEFL/TESOL was required for a work visa there. However, I've been contacted by a director from another school, and she didn't mention this as a requirement.

Sooooooo ..... ???

Laughing I see that Dave has a forum specifically on Poland and somebody there should be able to give you the truth about visa requirements for Poland. First-hand information is always the best. I tend to Google things to double-check any information that I receive on here.

My area of research is China, so I don't know a lot about other regions.

Good luck, though. Smile
