Hello,

I am considering taking a summer camp position with an org. called American Language Village. The position is about 5 weeks, pays $885 American and offers airfare reimbursement of $380 at the contracts end. Airfare is not included; should it be? I am in the states, and I have several years of experience, glowing references (whatever those are worth) and I understand that my bargaining power may be higher now, what with the SARS scare.

I would be happy for any info on the ALV people or the fairness of the above salary. It is either this position or a similar one in China. At any rate, thanks in advance.

James

The airfare alone may cost you more than you will be paid. All job offers from Taiwan, over the net are bottom of the barrel. You need to be in country to find a good job.

EOD,

Thanks for the info. I have found some cheapola fares to Taiwan, still though I will only stand to profit $300 or so. I would much rather be over yonder looking for work, but I simply cannot make it there right away, my teaching term here has several more weeks. I also am only looking for summer work, as I have a pressing engagement here in the fall. I also doubt any camp would be willing to spring for a five week worker.

Other then surfing the various esl websites I cannot think of any other way to find out about the better paying camps... any info on that would be appreciated, but should my well not be so deep, so be it. However, as a resourceful squirrel, I must ask the questions and try all the angles.

Little help over here...

JG

Every May and June, I have been here in Taiwan (perhaps too many), the China post classifieds are a half to a whole page of foreign ESL teacher wanted ads. Have at look at it now.
http://www.chinapost.com.tw/classified/career_taipei.asp
Usually there are 50 to 100 ads for teaching positions. This year there are about 20. I have called some of them and the ones who spoke English said that the position is only available if the government doesn't order all schools closed.
The government said they were going to close the schools when there were 500 cases of SARS. We hit 500 last week and the government is still counting money rather than lives.
I am not trying to keep you from taking my job as I have already quit teaching. Luckily I have a little side business on e-bay that is doing unusually well right now. Many of the long-term professional teachers don't have that back up. They are the ones you will be competing with for the very few positions available. You won't make any money teaching in Taiwan unless there is a dramatic shift in the SARS situation for the better.

I worked that camp in many years ago " for the experience" . We worked morning to night seven days a week for that paltry pay.

Later , I worked another camp and got 60,000 for two weeks, moderate day and one day off.

Hello Wastoftime,
I'm curious to know more about the other camp you worked for in Taiwan. I worked for ALV last summer and am looking for something in Taiwan this summer as well. Any help you can provide would be appreciated. You can PM me if you want.
Thanks!

Absolutely true, of course.

It's funny how this thread started in 2003 and was picked up again almost five years later.... how'd that happen!?

I am currently working at ALV during winter vacation. It is funny. Some foreigners are so stupid. They don't even realize that working at ALV is illegal. What country allows a foreigner to work without a work permit? Not counting the fact that people from the old EU countries can go to other EU countries and work without a work permit.
