So I have FINALLY decided to defer grad school for one year and pursue this teaching english abroad thing that I have been hearing about for so long. I am currently studying in Sevilla, but will return to the US (sadly) in less than a month. However, my plans are to return this summer and do some more traveling here and then take a TEFL course (maybe generic maybe CELTA or Trinity, havent figured that out yet) out here during the month of August.

However, being a US citizen, I know that it will be nearly impossible to get the proper visas etc to work out here. I am thinking about finding a job in Mexico or another part of latin america, some place spanish speaking. I have figured out a time frame for everything, but I just want to see if it seems logical.

I know that many people find their jobs through internet job sites and by posting their resumes. Is that the best way to do it? Also, how does the whole visa issue work? If I decide on a job that is in, say, Peru, then will I have to return to the US to get my visa, or will I be able to do it when I arrive in Peru? I am a little wary of working illegally, although I do have friends here in Spain who get by just fine.

thanks and i await response! Smile

You're right about working in Europe--it's difficult for an American. You basically have to marry an E.U. citizen to get a visa.

There are some knowledgable people here regarding Mexico--you should post a message on that forum. You'll have no problem finding a placement in Mexico if you are willing to get away from the tourist towns, from what I understand.

The visa thing is different for every country. Some your employer jumps all the hoops and pays for everything. Others leave the leg work for you and the expense. But, generally speaking, employers will facilitate the process for you.

There's no better place than Dave's to ask about the specific countries you are interested in.

If you think you are particularly interested in a specific country or two or three - start watching all the job boards you can and save the job ads for anything that looks appropriate for you. Sometimes the best way to apply for a job is when they AREN'T advertising - rather than competing with the 200 that apply when the job is listed on Dave's - and getting lost in the crowd.
