i'm looking for uni jobs starting september. i know the average pay is 3000-6000 a month. that's about 1/4 what i'm making at a uni in korea, but i want the experience of working in china at a university. just checking to see from the people who have worked at a uni in china if the low hours, holidays, teaching experience, and cultural experience was worth the low pay. i know china is so big, and the teaching experiences are so varied, and i know it depends on the person; just wanted to hear a few reports.

i read on this forum that more money can be made working 40 hours a week at a private language school in a big city, but i think i'd rather take the pay cut and enjoy my teaching experience. any recommendations for a good university job. i'm looking to work in a big city, 12-14 hrs a week, good holiday, decent apartment, motivated students, classes under 30 students.

and is it easy to find part-time work, or private tutors to supplement the income? i heard between 100-150 yuan an hour is the average rate.

thanks.

It's what you said. You'll have a light load. Class sizes will rarely be under 30, but should be under 40. Be specific on what you want in the apartment, especially a fully-automatic washing machine.

Parttime work will be easy to come by as time goes on and you got the average rate right. Also, the holidays are great. 1 week in October, 4-6 weeks in Jan/Feb, 1 week in May, and a long weekend for our new year. Most uni's offer a decent health plan.

Other than that, it's the usual. Don't work for less than 4K wherever you are unless it's less than 10 hours per week.

See other threads as many aspects of teaching post-secondry in China have been discussed.

I would answer your question in the affirmative.
The only better job - in terms of job satisfaction and higher income - is work in a kindergarten!
All other jobs are run-of-the-mill.

I can't tolerate children, so I don't have a choice.
