It's nearing the end of the school year, so it may be a little too late now, but this thought came to me through another project. Around this time of year, I take some of my classes out for pictures. We have class pictures, small group pictures, pictures with their best friends, pictures with their teacher, etc. After I get them developed, I put them in a small photo album, number each picture, and let each student order whatever pictures they would like - - 1rmb each (I'm nice, but don't have deep pockets!). Then I look at the negatives and put together an order and bring it to my local photo shop to get multiple copies of each picture. It's a little work, but the kids are pleased and when they're pleased, I'm pleased!
Anyway, I take pictures througout the school year: Christmas parties, special class events, school events, competitions, on and on. I put some of them up on the picture board for a month or so for students to have a look. If I had thought of this earlier, I could have saved all these pictures (and taken more), maybe had double copies of each set and then let the kids make their own scrapbook/picture book/collage with them. They could get their classmates and teachers to sign them, we could write ENGLISH captions in them, create covers - - you know a yearbook sort of thing. Obviously, there should be enough variety and quantity of pictures so each student can make his or her own book.
I still can't get over the fact that Chinese schools don't have organized sports, clubs, mixers(dances), and other social activities. I'm sure some schools have them, but what about school newspapers or yearbooks? Do you think these kind of events/publications distract students from studying or enhance their school years?
But, back to topic - - anytime we have a "crafty" sort of project in class, most of my students seem to love it - - as long as you are incorporating English into the mix, this may be a good project for your students. What do you think? |
