|
|
Hi everyone,
I have a BA degree and an MA TESOL. I was wondering what kind of hourly rate can be expected at language institutes in Istanbul? Also, if I just showed up in August, do you think I would be able to get a job at a proper school? What is the average pay for private lessons? About how much do people spend a month?
I've taught in both Korea and Laos and know both ends of the income spectrum. I want to go in with my eyes open.
Thanks in advance! |

With your real qualifications don`t waste your time with any of the language schools. You would be hopelessly over qualified and would be apalled at the dross you would be working with. Also the dos/manager would feel threatened by you. A proper school-that`s the attitude. |

Around 10 new Turkish lira per hour (about $13 U.S. dollars per hour).

Somewhat difficult, as most schools do the bulk of their hiring in May and June, and like to have their staff lists by the end of June. Not impossible, as there are many 'no shows.'

Private lessons - depends on who you are teaching. But teachers usually make more with privates. It can be anywhere from 10 new turk lira up to 35 new turk lira. People currently in Turkey will have more pertinent details on that one.
Most foreigers find $1000 U.S. a month to be comfortable providing they have accommodation or housing allowance. On that figure, foreigners are even able to save 25% of their salary, or more, depending on where they live in Turkey. In Istanbul, people will spend more, but in locales far off the normal tourist tracks (Kayseri, Eskisehir, Adana, etc..) foreigners might save up to 50% or more of their salary, once again taking into account the free or subsidized accommodation.
As an example, when ghost worked at a famous Kolej in Antalya, everything was paid for (accommodation and meals in the school cafeteria) - so he was able to save around 80% of his $1000 plus salary - not bad for Turkey....his only expenses were for internet cafes, snacks outside school, films, and weekend travels. It was a good deal. Class management in the Elementary section was the issue there, which resulted in a short stay.
You will not save as much in Turkey as you might in some Asian countries and Gulf countries, but you can still save a bit. And in general, you will live a relatively stress free lifestyle in Turkey. |

ghost you are way off. 10TL is about $7.50. most language schools pay about 15TL. They alsol hire throughout the year. your information is not current.
with an MA I also suggest you look at the univs, but I know Koc is hired up. Try Sabanci or the other univs. Otherwise, at a language school you should get higher than 15TL. There should be housing or at least an allowance. ET pays a bonus-- I don't know if the others do or not.
if you get your own housing, you will prob have to pay at least 700TL/mo, depending on the area (that is Beyoglu) |

So is it worth it to just come to Turkey and hope to get something, is this realistic? Many of you say to go to real schools if you have quals such as BA, Cert TESL, and a PGCE, but what real schools are you talking about? Do you mean to just canvass on arrival, or write to schools with application letters before arriving? Can you give a list of these schools or a web page where they are found?
Thanks so much!! |

Wrong! A recently qualified teacher from Montreal was offered 10.5 yeni turk per hour for a job at a school with a reputation.
The newbie has been in contact with a number of schools, including E.T., Dilmer (Bursa), Kent English (Ankara) and other places.
One is trying to get the best deal for him, but it is not easy, because said individual does not want to travel to Turkey and look around for a job there. He wants everything fixed from here (Montreal, Canada).
The individual in question possesses a B.A. (Concordia University, Canada) and T.E.F.L. Cert. He is a very engaging and extravert personality and will do well in the classroom. Although his chronological age is 31, he looks around 22-24 years old (striking resemblence to McCauley Culkin, the famous actor). The would be pedagogue has previous experience in sales, selling advertising space for a reputable Montreal publication.
Any offers, please pm one, as soon as possible. |

No matter how poor the pay and conditions in tefl they always get people.
Have a look at this summer career opportunity in the UK:
St. Giles International are running a Junior Summer Residential Course at the Southampton Institute 10th July 2005 to 21st August 2005. Students will be between 12 and 17 years old. Students will have 20 lessons a week over 5 mornings as well as activities and excursions in the afternoons and evenings. They will be staying in the Institute residence along with the school staff. Teachers will teach 20 lessons a week as well as 40 hours of supervision. They will have 1 day off a week.
Please send C.V. to [email protected]
The pay:
225 quid a week. |

|
|
Does anyone know where to find out about University jobs for Turkey? I've done searches and found University webpages but none seem to be advertising for English teachers. I'm not available to come to Turkey until mid-August and would assume that this would be leaving it too late for most positions.
Thanks. |
