Which topics should be taboo on this forum.
If Celtic win the League then I reckon it should not be mentioned. Of course if Rangers were to win... that's a different story |

That's what I asked before, I'm not sure but if anyone tried to question the role of Ataturk then, that would be going to far.
Religon is out to.
On other hand, I think we can have a go at any school we like. |

Yep-- except in the abstract as it relates to cultural matters, religion is yasak. Too personal. I wouldn't touch Atatrk with a 10-foot pole. I mean that figuratively, of course, in case anyone out there is over-sensitive about Atatrk. Apparently the moderator finds belching unacceptable, so that's out too.
Bellybutton stuff, on the other hand... |

Darwinism
I once had a class laugh at me because I believed in darwinism (Although I admit it does has some flaws). They were like 'so your dad's a monkey ?' type stuff.
I was gobsmacked.
so that and bukkake |

Pope soap on a rope.
As far as I understand, Darwinism isn't even part of the school curriculum, except perhaps to mention in passing as an amusing idea.
Not that Americans are much better-- more and more schools there are refusing to teach it in favor of Creationism (in science classes!), or another new-fangled idea that combines Darwinism and Creationism... |

I know someone who was fired for trying to bring up the topic of Darwin. The students thought he was calling them all a bunch of monkeys. They complained to the manager and he lost his job. This wasn't in Turkey. |

That's pretty ballsy. I think I'd get fired if I tried that. Or at least spat upon... |

Culture is intrinsically linked to language. So how about "I don't want to teach you because I have a hangover"? Same thing isn't it? (I've just read something about the UK having the highest number of Monday morning sickies in the world) |

How about 'I don't want to teach you because you behave like a bunch of monkeys?'

There is a fairly clear mandate in this country about bringing such issues into a place of education. |
Yes, but I suspect the lines of education and religion are a little more blurred at my school than others. My big challenge these days is convincing them that using 'our religion says...' or 'God says...' or quotes from the Koran are not effective ways to support an argument in an essay... |

At Koc we were sometimes warned away from allowing students to write about the Kurds, though they mostly seemed to deselect that topic anyway. Some students wrote about the Armenian "question" and a few wrote about religious intermarriage (jewish girls falling in love with Muslim guys, usually).
At ET we have had the occasional student claim that we did not treat him well because he was a Kurd-- ridiculous, since our owner is Kurdish. Students tend to avoid the issue, as it is still a tender one. |
