What are the chances of finding work in the US (mostly southern states....ie TEXAS) for a girl with a BA (in geography & History) and a CELTA certificate. I have no overseas experience (yet..) and only volunteer classroom experience with ESL (other than that offered in my CELTA course). So what are the chances of finding a decent job??? ANYONE????

Thanks for reading along......
Jen

Are you still in BC? Are there special circumstances that require you to go to the southern US (like a family- fiance, with parents, husband, etc- move)?

It's really hard for Canadians to find work in the US if the US has enough people to fill the positions available domestically.

yes i do have a boyfriend that lives there. I am debating the benefit for me to move there or for us to find another place to move to. I realise it is difficult to find work when there is already english speaking people looking for the work that actually live there....ah well just thought I would put my ??? out there and see what happened!! thanks for the response....

Berlitz might have you, but you're looking at a really hard sell there. Your passport will cause problems as well, especially in a place like Texas where the idea of immigrants taking jobs away from qualified Americans hits pretty close to home.

Further to one of the previous posters, I don't think you're going to be able to overcome the legal hurdles. ESL teachers are not a listed occupation under NAFTA, and I gather you're not a "real" schoolteacher. So you couldn't work legally even if you could convince someone to hire you.

Maybe if you're really serious about this guy you can get married and he can sponsor you as an immigrant Razz .

Or maybe he's eligible to work in Canada under NAFTA, or both of you could work together overseas.

Many cities have adult schools, which are often operated by the high school district or by the county. In my experience, adult schools are willing to take ESL instructors with a wide variety of qualifications. CELTA (with minimal teaching experience) might look okay to many adult schools, especially if there is a local shortage of candidates.
