Does anyone know anything, good or bad, about this school? I did a quick search and found nothing on it. |

Zhengzhou is one of the good public universities: twenty-something in the rankings. Their website is www.zzu.edu.cn/edefault.htm
At least in economics the students are highly motivated, but they have a tendency to kill themselves (serious problem). I think you'd expect that to be the case throughout the faculties given the competitive environment.
The resources are top-notch and youll have no problems with admin if youre MS/MA qualified. If you've taught at a place like Zhengzhou it will probably add 10 per cent to your pay in the next job. |

I don't know if I can agree that teaching at Zhengzhou will add to your salary at other places. I doubt it.
There are two "top" universities in Henan, Henan University in Kaifeng, and Zhengzhou university. Both offer extremely low salaries.
Henan university was supplied by a Christian group (who accept low salaries), even this group stopped supplying teachers to the U because of the low salaries. Now foreign students learning Chinese do the english teaching at Henan U. Zhengzhou U is probably heading in that direction. The teachers from these groups get money from back home, and accept the lower wages, making it worse for the real teachers. Zhengzhou U boasted to me of the Brit, Phd, working at Zhengzhou U. for 4 years ... salary? 4,000 per month. After working there for four years!
The old campus is nice, you have probably seen it on Da Xue Lu. That campus is nice, in a good location. I would teach there in a second if they offered a reasonable wage (they pay Chinese teachers more) The foreign teachers apartments are a little small.
The new campus is far to the west, outside of Zhengzhou proper, right now nothing but new buildings and dirt covered fields. Lots of dust when there is any wind. Few shops, stores restaurants. A wasteland right now. The apartments are bigger. But there is nothing to do there. Make sure you ask which campus you will be living/teaching at, and make sure you visit the campus to see if you really want to live there
This is true of many of the schools new campuses. Post me me if you want more info. I should have the FAO phone number somewhere. |
