Hi, I posted a topic about a month ago with the subject heading as "distance learning degrees ok?"
Basiclly I was somewhat concerned about whether or not countries in NE Asia ie Japan would recognise my degree, as it was distance. Well thanks for your replies.
I've decided now to take the first year of my BA as distance from Athabasca University, then transfer to the University of Calgary (where I would take all lectures in a traditional class setting) for the final three years, majoring in English.
My question is, do you think this would be deemed acceptable as a degree in a country like Taiwan, as i'd obviously still be doing one year of the degree in the form of distance education. (Apparatly Taiwan does not recognise distance degrees)

thanks for your patience

dan

If you transfer your credits my guess is your final degree will come from Calgary, not Athabasca. You will have earned the degree the traditional way by attending classes.

I have no idea how this will play in Taiwan but by my reckoning Athabasca credits will be no more than a footnote on your transcripts or your resume. Your degree will be from Calgary.

The university name on the degree is the most important thing. If the actual piece of paper says "Calgary", you will have no problem. Taiwan basically checks to see if its a real university and that they can grant the degree awarded. They do not go in-depth into your transcript.

My transcript has credits from different universities and distance programs. My actual degree says Southern Illinois University. I have never been asked for my transcripts.

Check out this link. Start at article 38.
