Does a criminal record prevent me from working in Turkey? What kind of checks will they make?

Grahamb, confession time. I do have a criminal record. Whilst at univeristy I failed to pay my tv license. I got fined 25 quid payable back at 2 pound a week. It has never stopped me getting a work permit though.

I also have a criminal record and it hasn't been a problem. I think mine is probably 'spent' under the rehabilitation of offenders act, but I've never been asked to declare anything and no checks have been done to my knowledge.

Don't worry about it - it's not an issue

An infamous individual in a certain University City in Turkey was proud of having a criminal record for 'assault' and 'gbh' and had spent time behind bars in a number of countries. This individual does not even possess a high school certificate, and had been barred from a certain Gulf State country, for infractions committed there.

When the unfortunate charlatan learned that ghost had never been 'inside' he commented that ghost was a minority in his entourage.

The individual in question managed to land the position of Head of Department, of a Language school of somewhat dubious repute, somewhere in Turkey.

I think some of us have got it wrong on this one. As far as I know you are meet to have a clean criminal record. Yet the Turks see some crimes as less than others.
Since I got married (when ever I have started a new job) I'v had to get a turkish criminal record report. I once asked about what crimes would get me banned from teaching and I was told that things like fighting or one record for drink driving, was not a problem. They said at the time, that if you went in to prison then you would have a hard time and things would be reviewed. So I think that means that even if you ahve a record but where give a fine instead of time, then you should have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the input. I'm just trying to find out if I'll have any problems on arrival. Didn't like Ghost's comments about assault and gbh. Everybody has a history and if the boy he refers to has managed to score a good job then credit to him...

One has no problem with that, but the line has to be drawn when it is known that the individual in question continues to engage in aberrant and criminal behaviour in his adopted country, including inappropriate touching of female students in class, intimidation, and general public lewdness and disgraceful behaviour in public places. The individual is a very sick person and requires treatment, but is unwilling to face the facts.

The individual has also engaged in libel and slander. But everything can and will eventually be documented, when his victims speak out.

But the individual in question will eventually pay for his transgressions, sooner or later, as they all do.

Enough said...

Ghost. Everything you say about me is right on the money. I'm enjoying every minute of my time here. But at least I ain't a sexual deviant who indulges in kiddie porn.

Entrailicus, as we are talking about betting(on another thread) should we start a sweepstake as to how long it will be before this thread is locked?

Duuude, they're gonna get us in trouble.... Sad

Is it just me or does it seem like ghost has had some kind of personality split these last few days? Usually he's pretty moderate, but that jab at spelling on another thread and now this? Winter blues, I guess...
