I want to come to Thailand for the PELT training offered by TEFL International. I understand that the best option would be to arrange for both a 90 day visa and of course a 90 day round trip ticket. The price difference between a simple short stay ticket and a 90 day is phenomenal!
I would like to stay in Thailand after the training, and work. I have heard of the practice of getting a 30 day visa upon arrival followed by border crossings for one day and returning for another 30.
Would it work to buy a much cheaper round trip ticket and simply not use the return flight? Would this money saving idea be totally foolish?
Thanks

When, in life, do you ever have to use something you bought? I have, on a number of occasions had RT tickets and, because of a change of plans, ended up not using the return portion. Am I missing something, here?

Where are you coming from?

How long will you stay?

Have you thought about a 1 year valid ticket? Thats what I did for my first year, it meant that had I not enjoyed the place or job for whatever reason I didnt have to find the money to get a one way back home. The cost was not that much different from a normal ticket.

By the way, for a 90 day stay you need to get a 60 day tourist visa from your local thai embassy or consulate and then extend it at an immigration office in thailand for another 30days and then leave thailand to get a non immigrant b visa if you want to work.

This border hopping is only done by people who are not working legally. If you get things sorted, you dont need to spend 1 day every month going to Poipet ( Cambodia ) or wherever.

You need to consider a number of things. If you plan to return home within a year then it is best to buy a one-year return ticket. They might cost a little more but you can change the date and you always know you have a ticket which gives you the option of heading home anytime.

I'll be coming from Japan where I have a multple re-entry passport stamp and 2 years remaining on a work visa. Japan is rather discouraging to me for some reason, but it is a closer home base than the States. I keep thinking I would enjoy Thailand so much more.
