Hey gang...

it's been a roller coaster year... I had a contract with NOVA that I ended up rejecting. I thought my days of wanting to teach ESL were over...

well, for those of you who keep thinking that the idea of going to Japan is far-fetched and "sketchy" think again... I have been thinking of taking the jump again!

So, needless to say, NOVA won't have me anymore... they probably have a contract OUT on me, haha...

If I am gonna go this time around, could someone that has knowledge of the salary of the "Big 4" let me know where the potential is to make the most money? I'm talking overtime, base salary, bonus, etc... lumping all of these factors, which company that hires in North America offers the most earning potential?

Thank you very much for your time in advance... NOVA had a lot of fringe benefits as far as salary, I hope that I can say that about other companies as well.

PS- Are there any other schools, other than NOVA, that gives extra money based on having an MA? I have one and NOVA said they would give me a little extra on top of my salary (it wasn't much but it's better than nothing!)

If you have an MA why are you applying for conversation school jobs? None of them to my knowledge pay extra for having a Masters and NOVA pays you only 5,000 yen extra a month. Not even beer money.

Depending on what your Masters is in, I would consider part time university positions or ALT at a high school. You need to get your foot in the door and perhaps network for positions, but IMHO going after conversation school eikaiwa type jobs where they all pay the same, and salaries are going down means you are simply going sideways.

There is also the fact you will teach less classes per day and not have the 6-8 lesson grind at a major conversation school. depending on the school you can get 20,000-25,000 yen a month per 90 minute class which works out at about 5,000 yen per 90-minute class per week. Compare that with about 1,300 yen an hour at NOVA. (220,000 yen divided by 160 hours/month or 40-hour week.

You might have to come here first and work at a conversation school, but you are better off making use of your qualifications and experience than hoping that a conversation school will throw the kitchen sink at someone with a masters degree. The perks are not all that great, when you add them up.

If you just want to compare the Big Four, look at their web sites. Financial information is there.

What field is your MA in? That will play big part in your ability to present it as a qualification for a TEFL position.

Havent worked at NOVA for years but they offer you a small bonus and performance pay raises (?), chance at extra promotions and "advancement". Pension and proper health insurance is not reallly on the table yet. NOVA overcharges on the apartment rentals.

Zzonkmiles would be able to tell you better than I can, but he mentioned in another thread the AT and the AAMs have to do pretty degrading stuff to get promoted and I think to an extent you compromise your dignity and self-respect. The foriegn managers without exception dont really have the respect of the troops they perhaps think they have, and a lot of has to do with ego as well. If doing that so you can get promoted is important to you then go for it. Personally i dont think the money they pay you for being an AT or AAM is good enough, and there will always be people who sell themselves and step on others to get ahead in the company.

alright errbody... my MA is in Media Arts... People tell me that translates into a diverse range of employment opportunities... I just think it is vague.

By the way, it is a British MA and I'm American...

In terms of money, I don't think there's too much difference between the big schools. They all offer the opportunity to increase your basic wage. If you want the security of a conversation school, just apply to them all and pick whichever one seems best suited to you. I think a lot depends on the branch you get sent to and the students that you have. It's a bit of a coin flip, you just have to hope that it works out.

If you're keen to teach children. I was before. Then Peppy Kids looks pretty good.

Not too much work for the wage. 4-5 classes a day. Not too late either from what I understand...

This would be good for cash privates after or before work!!!

Seems to be a well run place with professional managment.

I've never read a bad thing about them.

BTW I don't ususally endorse schools.

If you flew to Jpaan you oculd interview anytime by the looks of it.

Peppy Kids recruits regularily in Vancouver - the North American contact number is a Vancouver one. A friend of mine worked there and had no problems. She enjoyed it and ended up coming back to Vancouver to get her B.Ed and teaching certificate and is now teaching elementary school for the Vancouver School Board. You really need to like kids, though as there is a fair amount of singing, dancing and acting silly involved, which is all good for you as far as I'm concerned, but many others disagree.
